(28,075 posts)I have always thought that sounds like mindless nationalism.
how come they left out "We're #1, We're #1" Our democracy is on its sick bed, but "We're #1"

Pick a side there is no in-between now. Both sides don't do it. I would strongly suggest the free democracies but to each their own.

(4,111 posts)jigoistic, USA is the best country in the world, American exceptionalism that got us and the world in the shit. If you think that's a chip on my shoulder, that's fine. But if you know history, you know that such patriotism and nationalism is poisonous.

(1,900 posts)what a person (means) when they do differs according to the ideals of that person.
For many a right winger it's meaningless jingoism and a chance to feel a part of a bigger
group - much like a sports chant. That said, I'm sure for those who post here -
it's more likely to mean liberty and equality and one person one vote, etc.
I get what you're saying but for too long the right wing has claimed
to be patriots and implied that democrats are somehow not real Americans.
Sometimes to communicate with most people who aren't politically savvy or political junkies
like many of us here, it is necessary to employ symbolism. All the world's a stage...
and I agree.

(11,098 posts)Chanting "USA, USA, USA" is not my style but I put my flag out every morning and take it down at dark.
It is long past time for Democrats to belie the Rethuglican story that we are unpatriotic.

Yes, it's still and jingoistic but it's also using their stupid rhetoric against them.
Republicans sat on their hands while Democrats celebrate this country.
Consider it.

I did as well and would do it again. Everyone has an opinion and a choice. I would guess, those who dislike didn't participate. USA USA...

(25,977 posts)It makes me cringe. I don't like hearing it at sporting events, and I think in almost any setting it tends to sound jingoistic, arrogant, and rude. YMMV.
As a spontaneous reaction to Biden's push for more manufacturing at home, it worked. He said, "Instead of relying on foreign supply chains, let's make it in America!" and the sustained applause naturally segued into the chant. To my own surprise, it is the first and only time I haven't minded hearing it. It was no "Look for the Union Label" moment, but in that brief time it worked for me. Felt kinda nice, in fact.
But that's a probably a one time thing for me.

(111,094 posts)Biden would only go so far on his partisanship. He did not comment on the attack upon our Capitol or those that were involved with it.
In my opinion, that was like the under-lying reason some were chanting USA! USA! USA !
They remember how their lives were threatened on January 6th of last year. They felt that some had betrayed our country. I do not normally see the Democratic Party as a nationalistic Party.
Just my opinion.

(25,977 posts)Thinking back, it is unusual that Biden said nothing about January 6th. It's also smart and a good thing, as it would've raised hackles while he was trying to give a unifying speech. I agree the Democratic Party is not a nationalistic Party, but the trauma from that day is still fresh for those who were there. Their reaction makes sense.
It was a bit enthusiastic to be just about manufacturing.
That puts a different perspective on it, gives the moment a deeper, more layered meaning. It's a little embarrassing that I missed it at the time. I'm glad you mentioned it.
