I think the biggest mistake for Democrats and Progressives is to yield patriotism and the flag and what it represents to traitors and racists.
Indeed, I think the problem you see when Democrats are unnerved by such displays of patriotism is that they have bought into Republican appropriation of these symbols even though Republicans have stood for oppression of minorities and undermining the basic freedom to vote.
Personally, it infuriates me when racists, insurrectionists, and proponents of the big lie wrap themselves up in the flag claiming that they are supporting freedom and democracy. We cannot and should not surrender ownership of our Nation and its symbols. We cannot complain about being alienated, yet treat ourselves as not really being American.
I am sure that Republicans will feel threatened by the fact that Democrats are re-claiming the symbols of the USA and they should be. We should not be ashamed or our patriotism and standing up for the values that we aspire to as a Nation.

Republicans sat while Democrats cheered this country. I can't believe some here are criticizing that.

That's a small, narrow minded approach where we have to always feel shame for our previous leaders failures. It's anti democratic on its face. We evolve. We're a unit of ever evolving people. We've definitely made mistakes in who we've voted in, and they've done atrocities but right this moment we can be happy for a moment in our choice in the current circumstances. We are stronger under our President in these tumultuous times we're in! There's no shame in being relived and celebrating some goodness in these dark and scary times.
