Voice message reveals Russian military unit's catastrophic losses in Ukraine

"just 18 out of 150 guys survived”

Exclusive
Kyiv independent
Illia Ponomarenko

Seven days into the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it remains unclear how many casualties Russia has sustained.

The Ukrainian government said on March 2 the “indicative” number of Russia’s losses stands at 5,840 people. Russia has only admitted it had any losses four days after it started the war, and had not given any numbers.

But multiple videos and pictures from battlefields suggest that invading forces have sustained severe casualties.

And yet another piece of evidence obtained by the Kyiv Independent sheds more light on the fate of Russia’s 35th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

say that Russia having 5,800 casualties is impossible because that would relate to 10's of thousands of wounded. According to former military officials there hasn't been enough fighting for that number to be accurate.

My Ukrainian friend says the word is similar to “casualties” in that it might be mistranslated at as meaning only death but usually means dead or seriously wounded.

in the field by RU officers. RU was not going to provide medical care to their wounded.

So their death count would be higher than normal?

I assume the Ukrainians will use it along the lines you mention.

Google Maps users are uploading dozens of photos of destruction, injured civilians, and captured Russian soldiers in Ukraine to the Google Maps listings of popular locations within Russia’s major cities.

the Russians just kill them. Fucking hard to believe. I doubt that will be good for morale.

I just try to keep a doubting Thomas kind of approach.

from reports I've seen, along with videos. Could be true, could be propaganda.

I wonder why the Russians brought mobile cremation units along. Could they be using them to burn their own casualties to hide the number of losses? Or Ukrainian losses?

He was telling his mother that RU wounded soldiers were being shot in the field. While wounded Ukrainian soldiers were being given medical care. He was very distraught about it.

Yes I don't know if it was real or not. And I only had the translation to go by, I don't speak Russian.

Since the Russians planned so poorly and assumed it would be a quick invasion, they probably don't have field hospitals or medical personnel or equipment. This is believable.

they had no idea that they were going to war, they were told it was a training exercise now they're caught up in this maelstrom and they don't know why.

I'm more focused on the Ukrainians as they are getting killed or they are leaving their country. My heart aches for them and I don't care about the Russians. I just wish they would stop
