(4,845 posts)you learn to stay quiet because there is a real chance of you getting killed if you go on a protest. That's life as you know it in Russia, North Korea and China. That doesn't mean there would be no protests but you have to be really passionate about something that you are willing to give up your life to do for that protest. So, it will remain small in numbers in those countries and it is intended to be that way.

(22,767 posts)We dont live in Berlin, where participation in a protest gets you lots of pats on the back. You can end up with a concussion, or spend the night in jail, or be required to remove your underwear [for a cavity search], or [possibly] have a felony case opened against you. Given the current situation, we cant exclude the possibility that protests will eventually be punishable by 20-year prison sentences or the death penalty. So, yeah, in my view, people are coming out in force.
