General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe Willard Hotel: We now know Garland is investigating the headquarters of the Jan 6th attack.
The oath keeper who pled guilty yesterday was charged with seditious conspiracy. That means everyone connected to him is being investigated. This oath keeper was with Roger Stone at the Hotel. That means Roger Stone is being investigated by Garland and everyone connected to Stone, including everyone at the Hotel. This is how investigations work.
This oath keeper has agreed to cooperate fully, which includes testifying. The prosecutors would not have agreed to a plea deal unless this guy has the goods. There is a good chance more and more people are going to turn.
The Jan 6th committee just announced they have evidence of very serious crimes. This evidence will be turned over to Garland.
Put this all together and it is clear Garland is investigating the top people involved in the conspiracy. He started from the bottom, the oath keepers and now he will go after the people at the Willard Hotel, which leads to Trump.
More people are going to be indicted, more people are going to turn. It's just a matter of time.

(21,433 posts)a high level investigation about sedition?
Even city cops and detectives don't share details of their investigations with the general public. And now you think the FBI and Attorney General should make details of their investigation public? On what planet does something like that happen?

(4,913 posts)Garlands investigation has no time limit. Everyone at the Willard Hotel should be very worried. Eastman was there and we know he is being investigated. Stone , Bannon, Flynn, Rudy, a bunch of Trump lawyers were all there planning a coup. The committee has stated they have the evidence to tie everything, everyone together in a conspiracy.
Their evidence will be turned over to Garland and Garland will follow the law.

(15,084 posts)But Garland has until November 2024 to get his work done. Even if the Repugs take over in 2023, the Executive branch will still be under Dem control.
I'd like to see indictments drop TOMORROW though.

(15,206 posts)That is crucial to keeping democracy in this country. If Republicans grab the House (which is more likely than not the way things are currently going), and possibly even the Senate, we will have much, much harder time thwarting Republican authoritarian ambitions.
I simply do not get people who think that DoJ eventually, maybe getting around to taking strong actions against top coup plotters any old time during what's left of Biden's first term is good enough.

(3,701 posts)Absent a signed or witnessed Trump-lawyer agreement, can attorney-client privilege actually exist?
No agreement means the conspirators have no privilege to remain silent, unless they admit to knowing or fearing that their actions are (were) criminal by pleading the 5th Amendment.
With such an agreement, Trump is directly connected to the coup, unless the lawyers claim they never told their client anything.
Such a circumstance would be a declaration that they kept their client dumber than a rock.

In 27 years I never represented a client without a fee agreement signed by both parties.

(3,647 posts)Eastman was asked repeatedly by the Committee to produce a signed agreement for legal representation for TFG. He hasn't delivered one because it doesn't exist. These bone heads were winging it the whole time. Their sloppy practices have undermined their entire defense.

(21,319 posts)Just my internet lawyer's opinion that a quicker way to Trump would be through the fake elector scheme. We do know that it has been 50 days since the Michigan AG sent the fake elector scandal to DOJ. We do know that about a month ago the Deputy AG, Lisa Monaco said that DOJ was investigating the referral, hopefully DOJ is investigating more than just the referral but with the select committee being involved with John Eastman it gives me pause.
Maybe this flipper knows enough to flip on Trump, but I believe that Roger Stone will go to jail before flipping, regardless it's excellent news.

(7,281 posts)Very grateful at long last that the Jan. 6th event is now "officially Sedition".
Just curious, has anyone who pleads guilty to Murder charges, be allowed to be home confined? Aren't these individuals detained while awaiting sentencing?
I don't understand this practice of home confinement for the most egregious of offenses.

If they think they are going to ride it out until the election. If Trump is re-elected in 2024, then it's all over.
He will be untouchable.

The article contains names of foot soldiers advancing the failed attempted coup.
The Willard Hotel was mostly lawyers.
The Trump hotel "attendees" on Jan. 4, 5, are a different set of coup plotters.
