I assume the warships will be right offshore. They would have a fairly wide protective stance.

But the Russian ships probably have some decent air defenses. I think they'd be better off trying to kill Russian Naval Infantry (Marines) as they land. The Crimean "marines" apparently have very low morale and are reservists.... a bit of resistance and they be stymied. But that may be why the Russians want to land them behind friendly lines.

I guess I should have posted 'By What?'.

Not sure which warships, but the Russians have some sophisticated naval platforms. I doubt any planes could get close enough for bombing.

Don't know how deep the water is, but if the ships are close enough they could offer some protection to the Marines as well.

If Odesa falls, they'll have a land bridge all the way from Luhansk to Odesa.

Well, I won't claim to be an "expert" but I have studied military history quite a lot (I am an amateur to be clear), but amphibious ops mesh fairly strongly with my day job. In a period of my career I was heavily involved with USMC aviation and learned quite a bit about amphibious operations for that.

You use, standoff, anti-ship weapons. I'm not sure Ukraine has any such capability and if they do it's probably very old and in very limited numbers. Russian naval SAMs, on paper, can engage targets out to 20 miles. These targets include anti-ship missiles. Ukraine is working on a home-grown anti-ship cruise missile but they are not scheduled to go into service until April. Even then the numbers, probably, wouldn't be sufficient to overwhelm Russian fleet-defense SAMs and CIWS. Basically, if the Russian stuff works as advertised, everything would get shot down.

Most will go against Putin (it's already happening) and try to force him to stop this madness. Circling the Ukraine borders by the Black Sea and Belarus with no money nor supplies will be hard to control. There are side to Ukraine that can bring in the necessary humanitarian needs and weapons. Russian soldiers are surrendering en masse.
