Right wingers use "liberal" words and concepts to toe in their agenda. They have ABSOLUTELY NO respect for free speech or debate, but will use the concepts of tolerance, free speech, and discourse to try to argue their ideas. Cancelling was initially discussed on Black Twitter with the idea that people would advise others who were describing a toxic relationship to "cancel" that person (terminate the relationship). It got picked up and used as a call to boycott or unleash some sort of sustained backlash against Twitter and You Tube users who made some kind of transgression.
Cancelling (in the bad way) does happen where a person says something poorly, or makes a bad statement, or does something stupid, and is then essentialized, demonized, and people try to isolate and diminish or even destroy that person's access to social media.
The way the right is using it however, is like you said... anytime warranted consequences are called for, like when Louis CK was masturbating in front of women comedians with the threat of ruining their careers for non-compliance, or Trump getting kicked off Twitter for spreading disinformation about COVID-19 and the January 6th Insurrection. Those are consequences. If I start spouting off about how "Democrats are horrible" or Democratic politician X is the worst piece of crap ever, I fully expect to either get a warning, suspension, or even get kicked off of DU. Why? Because by joining, I acknowledge the rules of the site against those very things. I was not cancelled. I was correctly given consequences for braking the rules.
Again, the whole point is that right wingers ALWAYS use the tools within Liberal thought and practices to try to destroy liberal thought and practice. Their ideology is not based in logic and is not really defensible on its merits so they have to SNEAK it in or pound it in by force of will.

We're days away from Russia blaming CRT and the 1619 Project for the consequences they're facing.

(21,856 posts)whole that's canceling them, the republicans, the idiotic things that they stand for, the stupid ignorant things that they stand for, such as
CRT, and all of the other nonsense that they have come up w. Anything, anything at all, despite how crazy it is, they will fling at the rest of us, in order to try and still be relevant, still be in power somehow, since most of their positions, etc. are idiotic too, mostly dealing w/ letting the top 1% keep all of their wealth, and not pay a dime in taxes. No other issue really matters to repugs.

(11,690 posts)"Liberal-fascist circles"? What the hell does that mean? When a society turns fascist it ceases to be liberal. Those terms are mutually exclusive. Any scholar or student of political history worth a damn, would also know that it is conservatism, not liberalism, that lends itself freely to fascism. Can liberal states turn to fascism? Sure, anything is possible. The core tenets of Liberalism however, DO NOT easily lend themselves to fascist thought, though a glaring weakness of liberalism is its inability to effectively combat right wing extremism. Right wing extremists often use the mechanisms of liberalism to get their foot in the door. The use of "tolerance" as a cudgel is a prime example. Liberals are supposed to "tolerate" all perspectives and when we reject concepts like "racism", "White Supremacy", etc... we are the worst thing a liberal can be... INTOLERANT Hell yeah we should be intolerant of Nazis, racists, White Supremacists, and other extreme ideologies of hate. That isn't anti-liberal, that is prosocial.
We really need to get better at countering this stupid, sneaky method that the right wing uses to advance its agenda. Tolerance has its limits. We can acknowledge and contend with arguments that are based in good faith. Conservatism and its more radical brother fascism are not good faith ideologies.
