I'd of course love to see the Russian Mafia targeted by sanctions, but how the hell as a practical matter can that be done effectively? Wouldn't we have gone after them fiercely already if we knew how to?

I think his first father-in-law was a mob boss, but I haven't been able to find anything definitive on that point.
Certainly a KGB lt-Colonel doesn't ordinarily gain a fortune of $200 billion or build $1 billion palatial estates. Nor do non-mobbish, non-corrupt leaders of countries.
