A Florida fund-raiser planned for April that was to feature Melania Trump has been called off after state regulators there concluded that the company working with the former first lady to organize the charitable event had not properly registered to solicit contributions, the New York Times reports.
Tickets were put on sale for as much as $50,000 for a VIP table, with the money, she said, slated to provide scholarships to children emerging from foster care.

(15,084 posts)Apparently she said that "a PORTION of the proceeds" would go to scholarships.
Reminds me of the golf events for a children's cancer charity that Brother Gums organized, insisting that all the money would go to the charity. OOPS! He forgot the fine print........ minus fees for the Trump business. Golf carts don't grow on trees, you know.

(8,818 posts)you would be appalled at even some famous ones that direct a large segment to "administration" costs.
The FBI said that there are entire groups of charities that are over run with people starting it and gleaming most of the money collected by their donors. They said in the article I read that by far, the worst group was Breast Cancer Charities. They said the number of them was staggering, and that last year they began to investigate just 600 of them across the nation.
If you want to give money, there are respectable websites that have investigated all legitimate ones, and give the breakdown of how much money goes to the head of the charity, and all administrative salaries and wages......
Sorry, I can't remember the name of the biggest one, but it is on the internet somewhere!
My family gives a whole big bunch of money every year to one of the best here in Colorado, FOOD BANK OF THE ROCKIES !!! I think their Admin expense is like 3%.........They are a huge group, and help people all along the front range and do a spectacular job with many people volunteering their time..........
SergeStorms
(19,200 posts)for investigating the legitimacy of charities. They tell you who they are, and what percentage of the charity goes to "administrative costs". You wouldn't believe some of these "charities". Some use outside organizers to run their "charity" drives, to the tune of 25, 30, even 40% of the money they take in.
I never give a penny to anyone without checking Charity Navigator first, even the most honest sounding charities.

(8,818 posts)That website is the best.
I have noticed that several of the assumed "good" charities, that were exposed for outright fraud, among other things, laid low for a couple of years, and have recently come back full steam ahead, counting on potential donors to have poor memories.
I gotta tell you, most of the things that come at us are scams.......The Federal Trade Commission that went after false advertisers was neutered by Reagan in the 80's and were never able to get back on their feet and get back to their jobs of protecting us from grifters and corporations committing blatant false advertising.......
Just look at THE epitome of criminal charities, committed and still committing fraud, by Trump and his Spawn....and they got their hands slapped and started new ones..........At least Melanoma's are spotted right from the git go and publicized across the nation before it even gets started...............
Grifters, one and all.

(19,200 posts)When I still had a land line telephone I used to get solicitations all the time. The national "do not call" list was a joke, so I just got rid of the land line. Anyway, I always told them " I don't give donations over the phone, mail me your information". Know what? None if them ever mailed me their information. I'll never figure out why. Everybody wants to steal your money.
Take care, DP. Stay healthy.

(81,238 posts)so maybe it was slightly slimmer than the pricey version, or the sky-high heel was maybe a half-inch shorter or some such. Just change the design or a design element ever-so-slightly and Presto Change, you declare it YOURS because its DIFFERENT!!! and you're off to the races. And very few people are the wiser, and you DID "change" something that technically makes your version different from the original, so you get away with it. Especially if you're selling yours for $150 while the original costs 800-900 dollars. I read an article about that awhile back. Back when she was still "in business."

That's if they can find the money or a legitimate charity-- this is Florida, after all.
Does it matter that she hasn't reserved a venue for this thing "somewhere in Florida"?

(32 posts)Now who believes a repuglican (spelling intended) gives a fuck about any children, especially those emerging from foster care needing an education? Does anyone notice that most colleges give scholarships to excellent students with high grades anyway? So will these be "scholarships" for those in financial need. That would mean a repuglican helping someone out of poverty. Be careful, repugs, you would not want this idea to spread.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services strategic communications officer Erin Moffett responded to our request for comment today to say that Whip Fundraising, the organization that was actually running the event for Trump, is about to complete its registration process with the state as a result of its investigation. Their website accessvast.com is no longer public, but an archived version shows unverified claims about raising millions for charities.
Furthermore, Moffett says that a new and different charity named Generation Justice Inc. stepped in to be the properly registered charitable beneficiary of Melania Trumps BeBest fundraising efforts. Once registered, Whip Fundraising plans to associate itself with Generation Justice. Her office plans to issue an official statement later today about the matter.......
This isnt the Trump familys first foray with state regulators over charity fundraising problems. The former president paid a hefty $2 million fine for admitting to 19 violations of the law in a settlement with New Yorks Attorney General dissolving the Trump Foundation. Donald Trump admitted to personal misuse of funds along with an agreement to restrict his involvement in charitable service in the future while in the Oval Office.
