"Say gay! Say gay! Say gay!"
That's what more than 500 students chanted at Flagler Palm Coast High School's stadium Thursday morning while waving pride flags in a walkout protesting House Bill 1557. The bill is a controversial measure that would prohibit school instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.
Critics have labeled it the "Don't Say Gay" bill, though its purpose is to support parents' rights when deciding what they want their child to learn about sexuality.
FPCHS junior Jack Petocz organized the walkout for not only the high school, but for schools across the state to support LGBTQ+ rights for students. More than 20 schools have been identified as participants with hundreds of students in each school showing their opposition to the House Bill by walking out of class.
Following the protest, Petocz, told The News-Journal he had been suspended until further notice "pending an investigation."
"Following the protest, I was called into the principals office, told I was disrespectful and openly advocating against staff," Petocz said. "They suspended me from campus until further notice. I informed the principal I wasnt going to speak with him and was going to talk to a lawyer."

(1,962 posts)So a student is suspended for speaking out against a vile, hateful, bigoted piece of QOP legislation. So, speaking out against the "party of freedom and free speech" will get you suspended? Yeah, so much for "free speech." And, gee... Where are the "mighty" QOP "warriors" to stick up for Jack Petocz and accuse the school of "canceling" him by suspending him?
Hmmm? What's that? All I hear from the right are crickets. What a shock.
Good on you, Jack Petocz. You are my new hero today. You and the other students who spoke up and stood up and pushed back. Thank you for using your voices for good and not evil.
