She was being moved from the hospital in pittsburgh to the hospice in town. They got her into the facility and she passed. I want to thank you all for your kindness in letting me vent. We knew it was coming but it still stuns. (Sorry for any errors in tablet)

(25,862 posts)A bit over a year ago I got a call on my cell phone. The man calling identified himself as Officer Brian somebody with the Tucson police. I knew what he was going to say, and so I put him on speakerphone, as my sister was visiting me. It was the news that our younger brother had died. Sad, but not unexpected, as he'd been in declining health for some years.
I'll add this good news. My sister was able to take control of our brother's bank account. We knew he'd long wanted his good friend Tom to have his leftover money, and sister was able to make that happen. Hooray!
This is a reminder to all of you that you need a will. You need to designate who should get your stuff, your money. Have a POD (pay on death) on your checking account. And if those you will your stuff to die, make a new will. Better yet, have a will that anticipates such things.

(6,888 posts)You can make the POD your estate and then put details in your will. But if you don't have a POD there, it's likely to be distributed before the will is even seen, let alone officially read. Same goes for life insurance policies.

(25,862 posts)I have a will, needed PODs, and pretty much every thing else needed.
I've been through settling the estates of various others. It is truly vastly more complicated than you know, if you've never been through this.
When I see people say something like, "I don't care, I'll be dead" I want to scream. You need to find out what it is like, you need to have a clue what it is like.
Everyone over the age of 18 needs a will. I made sure both of my sons made a will when they were 18. Fast forward a decade or so. My younger son died, at age 30. But he had a will. Which made lots of things very easier.
So, to every one who might see this post, make sure you have a will. Trust me, it will make things vastly easier for your survivors
