STANFORD, Calif. - The coroner's office on Thursday determined that the death of Stanford women's soccer player Katie Meyer was suicide.
The County of Santa Clara Medical Examiner-Coroner said there is no foul play related to Meyer's death.
"We are exceedingly saddened to hear about the death of Katie Meyer, a beloved, talented, and respected Stanford student, athlete, and Santa Clara County resident," the coroner's office said in a statement. "The Medical Examiner-Coroner extends sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Katie Meyer."

(3,590 posts)Stanford can be a very high pressure place for Students and beginning/nontenured professors.
Students that come in are a cohort of very bright people who have more than one strength. They aren't a bunch of all nose in the books types. Many have troubles adjusting to the fact that although they were top of their class in high school that they may be average or worse there. I'm sure there are similar pressures at MIT, Cal Poly, and many of the Ivys.
We will probably never know what drove her to this. Great student, exceptional goal keeper, and probably great at something else also. It is sad.

(6,918 posts)These young men and women face pressures most people never face in a lifetime. My heart goes out to her and the millions of other students crushed under the weight of college debt and career choices.
The mixture of money and academics has let our children down. Schools gouge them, lenders prey on them, and companies exploit them as workers.
The system is rigged against them.

(8,334 posts)Womans soccer has a very high rate of concussion. Higher than football at most colleges. There is an interesting book called girl warriors, a good read if your daughter is an athlete.
Missed the main point, I am sorry for her loss, the last few years have been very difficult on all of us, but college students, especially those who are graduating this year have really felt the pains of Covid. The pandemic radically changer their college experience.
