President Zelensky has survived at least three assassination attempts in the past week, The Times has learnt.
Two different outfits have been sent to kill the Ukrainian president mercenaries of the Kremlin-backed Wagner group and Chechen special forces. Both have been thwarted by anti-war elements within Russias Federal Security Service (FSB).
Wagner mercenaries in Kyiv have sustained losses during their attempts and are said to have been alarmed by how accurately the Ukrainians had anticipated their moves. A source close to the group said it was eerie how well briefed Zelenskys security team appeared to be.
On Saturday an attempt on Zelenskys life was foiled on the outskirts of Kyiv. Ukrainian security officials said a cadre of Chechen assassins had been eliminated before they could reach the president.
Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraines National Security and Defence Council, told Ukrainian TV channels that Russian spies had tipped them off about the planned assassination.
Ukrainian officials claim the information that led to the deaths of the Chechens came from disgruntled agents in the FSB who oppose the invasion.

Yes, learnt in a word
These are alternative forms of the past tense and past participle of the verb learn. Both are acceptable, but learned is often used in both British English and American English, while learnt is much more common in British English than in American English.

Not that I don't already think he's over-the-top paranoid.

...he fingered the FSB because he knows Putin will think it's misdirection -- so saying it's the FSB covers up the fact that it really is the FSB....

(21,359 posts)Make him a martyr while his fake death would give him protection. Would that demoralize the country too much or inspire it? Don't hit me up for a crazy conspiracy theory, I'm just trying to think of how to keep Zalenskyy alive.

(81,312 posts)DEVIOUS creative thinking.
Especially since the enemy may not be prepared to admit or concede that theyve been out-maneuvered. I also cant help but suspect that the enemy assumes theyre facing naive, gullible, and easy unsuspecting pushovers. Theyre NOT.
And the more devious, the better. The enemy assumes were the too nice team. The longer they remain convinced of that, the better for the rest of us. THEYRE the ones wholl be unsuspecting. And that will be greatly to our advantage. Theyll be less likely to plan for, or be otherwise prepared for what we do. Theyre not anticipating that our side would fight dirty like they do. And THAT is to our advantage.

His courage and love for his country and people are surpassed by none. But I see an important role in the world for him.

(8,054 posts)right now. That country has already tried to get rid of him and he cracked down HARD on them, imprisonment and beatings. He's almost certainly got less loyalty and protection around him than Putin. But Putin would really have a fucking mess on his hands trying to control both Belarus AND Ukraine if Lukashenko somehow went bye-byes.
DFW
(54,405 posts)He would never have resorted to trying to assassinate Zelensky. It is more an indication that Putin is scared stiff of him. Putin must be resembling the last scenes of Hitler in his bunker whining about Verräter when in this case, Putin should clearly have the upper hand.
Wingus Dingus
(8,054 posts)security and enrichment--and turned them down. I imagine that wasn't part of Putin's plan. He thought Zelensky would flee for his own safety at the start of the invasion, demoralize the Ukrainian people, and make them surrender with hardly a fight.
