Suffer the poor Russian cats

Russian cats are the latest to be banned from international competitions after Ukraine invasion

---cats from Russia can't compete in any international competition, the Federation Internationale Feline announced.

In a statement posted on its website, FIFe said any cat bred in Russia cannot be imported or registered in its pedigree book outside the country. Not only that, but any cat belonging to exhibitors living in Russia cannot enter any FIFe show outside the country, no matter where they were registered. The restrictions will be in place until May 31.

"The FIFe Executive Board is shocked and horrified that the army of the Russian Federation invaded the Republic of Ukraine and started a war," the statement read. "Many innocent people died, many more are wounded and hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are forced to flee their homes to save their lives. We can all witness the destruction and chaos caused by this unprecedented act of aggression.

"The Board of FIFe feels it cannot just witness these atrocities and do nothing."

Noisy, crowded, frightening. There is the risk of feline disease spreading. I've been to a couple of cat shows in the past and I pitied the poor animals

They just want a sunny windowsill and naps and cardboard boxes.

I've been to a few, and while some of the "regulars" seemed to be used to all the commotion, many of the cats looked like they'd rather have been somewhere else, just sleeping in the sun or doing everyday cat stuff. Cat shows are for humans, and they are pretty weird events. There will be vendors selling cat-themed merch of all kinds - any physical object or item of clothing that can carry a cat image will be available for sale, along with toys and other gear for cats. And there will be rows and rows of tables with cages, often elaborately decorated, containing cats. The cats are often sleeping; if not, they'll be looking through the bars of their cages with expressions of ennui, or, if food is on offer, alert interest. Some cats will be out of their cages being groomed, because every hair has to be in place. These are usually Persians who always look crabby, so who knows what they think of the whole thing?

When they are called upon to be judged, the cats in a particular class are called to the judging stand and are taken out of their cages, one at a time, held up, stroked, their limbs and tails and eyes and bodies evaluated, like a Miss America contest but with more fondling. If a cat has attitude and tries to eat the judge it might lose points. I saw a lovely Norwegian Forest Cat hiss at her judge while being held up for scrutiny, and her owner was terribly flustered. "It's her first show," she explained. Lately there have been cat agility trials, which would be more fun for everybody, but these haven't turned up in CFA shows yet.

Russian humans should be excluded from international events, but their cats are probably relieved not to have to attend cat shows.
