President Trump is calling on the Group of 7 to readmit Russia to the group of leading economic powers, saying "we should have Russia at the negotiating table."
Moscow was kicked out of the group, then the G-8, four years ago after it annexed Crimea. It had been invited to join the group in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. But after Russia's intervention in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea, Western leaders sought to isolate Vladimir Putin's government.
The G-7 is made up of the U.S. and allies Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
Trump, talking to reporters as he left the White House for this weekend's G-7 summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, asked, "Why are we having a meeting without Russia being in the meeting?" He went on: "Whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, we have a world to run."

First off, what does that even mean, "not politically correct"?
Secondly, this is gonna be Trump again, about the current situation?

(11,738 posts)The invitation after the fall of the USSR, was to try to get Russia to adhere to global cooperation after decades of isolation. It didn't have as much to do with them being in the 8 largest economies. They are ranked 11th and were likely even lower when they were in the G-8.
The only reason that Russia is even relevant is that they possess nuclear weapons inherited from the Soviet Union.
Remember that we convinced Ukraine to give up the thousands of nuclear weapons on their soil, for the sake of peace.

(11,738 posts)However, Canada is one of the US' largest trading partners. It is an advanced "Western" economy and has multilateral trade with the other members and us a liberal democracy.
That is the criteria for being in the Group of ... nations. Japan is not "Western" but it is an advanced economy with liberal democracy as its tenets of government.
Russia is none of that. It was hoped that they could become that and have a seat at the table for stability, but in attacking Georgia, Crimea, etc...; with having a dictator as head of state, they proved otherwise.
