This is devastating. @bbc has halted entire news operation in Russia.

Putin’s war on truth is now directly a war on journalists. Huge solidarity to amazing Russian journalists whose work is now a criminal offence. Time hopefully to reflect on where attacking BBC ultimately leads

Statement by BBC director general.

All journalists in Russia now facing up to 15 years in prison if found to have published ‘fake news’ about Kremlin’s war in Ukraine.

Utterly horrifying.

When I worked in Santiago, Chile I watched BBC and CNN International for updates on the Iraq war. I would have been lost.

Ban Facebook
Run out media because of new law where if you publish *fake news* (the truth) you're looking at 15 yrs in the gulag.

BBC revives shortwave radio dispatches in Ukraine, and draws ire of Russia. MAR 03

As Russia is trying to cut off the flow of information in Ukraine by attacking its communications infrastructure, the British news outlet BBC is revisiting a broadcasting tactic popularized during World War II: shortwave radio.

The BBC said this week that it would use radio frequencies that can travel for long distances and be accessible on portable radios to broadcast its World Service news in English for four hours a day in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and in parts of Russia.

“It’s often said truth is the first casualty of war,” Tim Davie, director-general of the BBC, said in a statement. “In a conflict where disinformation and propaganda is rife, there is a clear need for factual and independent news people can trust.” [more]

9. Exactly. And I will bet there are a lot of shortwave radios still stored away in Russia.

I still keep the little mini Sony I bought decades ago when I was traveling/working throughout the Middle East. I'd bet it works just fine.
