Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for solidarity in a message broadcast to thousands of people gathered in cities across Europe on Friday.
Driving the news: Zelensky in the speech, which came a little over a week after Russia began its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, said that if Ukraine fell, "Europe will not stand."
"If we will fall, you will fall so please don't be silent, do not turn the blind on eye on this," he added.
What they're saying: "If we win, and I'm sure we'll win, this will be the victory for the whole democratic world," Zelensky said.

Ukrainian people are dying. President Zelensky is expressing his sense of responsibility to protect his country and its people.
There have been three assassination attempts on the President by Russian forces.
I think hes saying that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, hell attack other nations.
For these reasons, I think President Zelensky should use as much legitimate hyperbole as he needs to in order to project strength while asking for help.
Im not in his shoes and I deeply want him to succeed.

If you want to convince people to do what he's asking them to the atleast say something they will believe.

What will probably happen is a decade(s) long "dirty" war where lots of military contractors make lots of money

That aside, I'm not so sure that he's not at least partially correct in his assessment. We already know that Putin wants to recreate the old Russian empire, so we can pretty much assume he's not going to stop with absorbing Ukraine into the fold.

(36,103 posts)He's speaking as if he's a "world leader," but if he had any political experience, or even a background in contemporary European history, he'd know that Europe doesn't see him that way.
They'll sell him weapons, cancel Russian contracts, confiscate yachts, and tweet messages of support, but that's about it.
I think he means well, but he just doesn't get it.
