we've seen videos of war from reporters, but this is beyond the pale - watching the illegal annihilation of a country, of innocent people - it is intolerable because we seem to be completely unable to stop it. We know who Putin is, we know what he is doing - yet it is all shown, live, we watch, people are dying, people are being displaced, families are being torn apart.
We CANNOT allow this to become normalized. We CANNOT allow ourselves to become numb to this. We should all be shattered. And when I say We, it is anyone in the world who is able to watch but are not in the direct line of fire. We go on with our lives, we eat our breakfasts, take our walks, go to our jobs - but free, fellow humans are being impacted like this. It is intolerable.
I know I am a bleeding heart - I know this has happened often throughout history - this and far worse, of course - but that we can watch this unfold on TV in the comfort of our homes is simply sick - it is evil, what we are witnessing. And from many accounts - from our own common sense knowing what Putin is like, from the forces aligned against Ukraine - it is going to get worse. The images shown live could become simply intolerable.
What - who - will save these courageous, heroic people who have done nothing - they are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, incurring the wrath of a deeply sick and evil monster?
Intolerable. And devastating. And only just beginning.
Fuck all authoritarians. Fuck those who use innocent people to build and feed their fragile sick egos. And that includes the ones that are here in the US - we know who they are.

(38,474 posts)I think the coverage out of Ukraine is pretty fine. We are fortunate that we are not being lied to 24/7 by one state media outlet. In the end, it is always better to know than to not know.

(51,585 posts)from the minute I wake up until I go to bed. It is too much. Too much horror and pain. I can't stand it. The frustration is incredible. We want to help and can't. This will not become "normalized". We have eyes and ears and we will continue to be involved because we are human beings and we care about other humans.

(60,014 posts)we watched BBC world news, then PBS newshour - we are left speechless. I don't think we say more than a few words to each other - just processing the grief - and embarrassment that there seems to be nothing to be done.

(63,221 posts)I share your distress and sense of helplessness. I have sent money and share my support on-line but it doesn't feel like enough.
I wish there was a way we could have some real impact without literally going over there and fighting ourselves. (I would be dead within minutes - I am not a fighter, nor am I strong enough to survive such an environment. I'm not tough.) It makes me furious that so many of us are controlled by the whims of the rich and powerful and it is us who ends up suffering (in this case, the Ukrainian people, most Americans aren't genuinely suffering unless they have loved ones caught up in the war).
I just want it to stop and I think like so many of us, we are hoping for a miracle when we know that one may not come. It is profoundly depressing.

(1,289 posts)That's why people in Russia don't see coverage. Vietnam being in everyone's living rooms was what turned public opinion against that war.
The Ukraine coverage is why the world has united against Russia so strongly. Putin would rather that we saw nothing.
