NEAR UKRAINES BORDER Some 14 wide-bodied aircraft transported a bristling array of Javelin antitank missiles, rocket launchers, guns and ammunition to an airfield near Ukraines border on Friday, as the United States and European allies ramped up their efforts to give the Ukrainian military a leg up in battling a foreign enemy that far outguns it.
The top U.S. military adviser to President Biden inspected the weapons transfer operation in an unannounced trip, meeting with troops and personnel from 22 countries who were working around the clock to unload the armaments for transport by land to the Ukrainian forces.
The American weaponry, which included the Javelins as well as small arms and munitions, was part of a $350 million package that Mr. Biden authorized on Saturday; within two days, one official said, the deliveries were landing at an airfield near the border that can process 17 airplanes a day. What began as a trickle with only two or three planes arriving a day is now a steady flow, the official said, with 14 loads from one airfield alone.
Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, included a stop at the airfield as part of a trip to the region. As he spoke to troops, cargos of Javelins rolled behind him. Nearby, two C-17s, the enormous cargo workhorses of the U.S. Air Force, sat on the tarmac.

(14,173 posts)He obviously is taking great glee in watching NATO handwringing and saying they won't permit a no fly zone over Ukraine by them. NATO will watch Ukraine be bombed into the stone age first. All because they don't want to have a broader war with Russia.
But when is that excuse enough? Once Ukraine falls Putin will not stop.
DFW
(54,349 posts)A broader war with Russia probably means nuclear weapons.
There wont be a limited use of nuclear weapons. If one is used, hundreds will be used, rendering most of North America and Europe uninhabitable for the next 60 years. Not that any of us will be left to worry about it, of course.

(6,278 posts)There's a recent news story about the Russians bringing in a different type of warplane, the Su-34. It is broadly equivalent to the version of our F-15 that is optimized for ground attack - it carries more bombs, etc. than a typical fighter plane, but far fewer than a "heavy bomber" like a B-52. So the two posters are discussing whether this means a big difference in how much heavier Russian attacks from the air might be in light of the new appearance of these planes over Ukraine.
My way of gaining context on this is to note that even an ordinary modern fighter plane can deliver a bomb load comparable to those typically carried by US "heavy bombers" over Europe in WWII.
Oh - and many (but not all) of the missiles Ukrainians have on hand to shoot down planes can only be effective against planes that bomb from low altitudes. The Su-34 will likely be flying higher and thus be less vulnerable to those weapons.

llashram
(6,265 posts)speaks to the reality of POC living and studying in these countries and truthfully everywhere. Racism is always a fact of life faced by these POC and POC everywhere outside their historical countries of origin, north-south, east-west geographically worldwide. It has NEVER been different. In America, since 1619 brown skin people HAVE BEEN HATED, slavery cemented that hate. When I studied at Boston U. I talked to African students that had studied in the then Soviet Union. Racism was a fact of life then as it is now 50 years later in Ukraine and other counties in Europe and England. A POC studying to be a doctor, engineer, a physicist is still seen as worth less than those without melanin. That is the fact of living in a race-oriented world. Where race is seen as the deciding factor in being 'superior' or 'inferior'. Worth saving or not from death at the hand of a fascist aggressor's army as in this case of Ukraine.
Sad the world has internalized such hate. The human race is at war always intra-racially and interracially. I don't see attitudes toward minorities, especially Africans or any brown skin associated with Africa, as ever-changing. No matter if the country is Ukraine, no matter any country anywhere in the world. And the trump years showed the world it could continue the mindless, petty hate of racism, without consequence...
I know that the only way it can end is ALL people of conscience and goodwill in their hearts must stand up to racism as some are standing up to Russian aggression at this very hour.
People all bleed red, no matter their origin or circumstance. Vietnam 68-69 taught me that valuable lesson. It seems Ukrainians would understand that when it comes down to worth and skin colour.
Stay safe sheshe, I miss you also...

(54,349 posts)Westerners translate Slavic languages by interpreting contextas the individual translator perceives it, of course.
We have a Ukrainian friend over every Saturday. I speak Russian with him, but he speaks German with my wife, and German has articles. My wife has no Russian, and his German is very good. When speaking German, he ALWAYS calls his homeland the Ukraine. Slavic people learning western languages often leave out articles because they dont know when to use them. Its an alien part of speech to them. However, our Ukrainian friends here who are well versed in western European languages, including English, always refer to their homeland as Die Ukraine, the Ukraine, lUkraine, la Ukraina, etc. I dont know how one can claim absolute correctness over a translation of something that doesnt exist in the original.

(54,349 posts)There was a comedian in the fifties making fun of the so-called Soviet version of Little Red Riding Hood. Red's mom told her "here is basket full goodies." In English, it would be, "here is a basket full of goodies," but since he was imitating Russian (which he obviously spoke), he used their grammar. Russian is also a declined language, so to say "of," instead of using a preposition, they add something on to the end of the word, which we don't. City/a city/the city is "gorod." Of a city/of the city is "goroda." Of (some) cities/of the cities is "gorodov."
Many languages have their little quirks which makes them interesting (I speak nine), but it sometimes does make translating something exactly almost an impossible task. Assigning an article to, or eliminating it from a Slavic word often requires some creative translation, and even some guess work when trying to figure out what the other person meant. In time, it becomes intuitive, but that takes a lot of time. I got some real stares the first day I was in Russia, after years of studying the language and its literature. The trouble was, I had been fed a steady diet of Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Turgenyev, Gogol, etc. in high school and college. I had never been exposed to modern Soviet era slang. It was as if you had learned English from Charles Dickens and Herman Melville, and then landed in today's Midtown Manhattan the next day. I got more than one query as to whether I had had nice sleep these last hundred years. I explained that I had never been there before. They were polite and accommodating, but I got the "yeah, we figured that one out already" look.
Anyway, no harm done. Language lesson for the afternoon (it is 3 PM here) is now officially over!

(4,006 posts)can't get close enough to destroy mobile and towed artillery, let alone missiles with a far greater range. Principally, only an air strike or counter-battery artillery fires can stop the incessant bombardment. Not sure if the Ukes have artillery systems that locate Russkie cannons/missile launchers and precision-fire special shells to knock them out.
Yeah, more fighter bombers could halt the strikes and it seems their armor is stuck-fast for a host of reasons. If the artillery/missile strikes can be stopped, a standstill further hurts the Russkie advance. Hard to do however as the multiple spearheads (N,W, SW) make it really tough to fight on all fronts at the same time. Putin's generals did a lot of planning to encircle the Ukrainians.
