Ukraine digital army brews cyberattacks, intel and infowar

BOSTON — Formed in a fury to counter Russia’s blitzkrieg attack, Ukraine’s hundreds-strong volunteer “hacker” corps is much more than a paramilitary cyberattack force in Europe's first major war of the internet age. It is crucial to information combat and to crowdsourcing intelligence .

“We are really a swarm. A self-organizing swarm," said Roman Zakharov, a 37-year-old IT executive at the center of Ukraine's bootstrap digital army.

His group's inventions run from software that lets anyone on the planet with a smartphone or computer participate in distributed denial-of-service attacks on official Russian websites to bots on the Telegram messaging platform that block disinformation, let people report Russian troop locations and offer instructions on assembling Molotov cocktails and basic first aid.

This link is to Stars & Stripes, a military publication that, if you're not familiar with it, well, you should be. I'm tired of being afraid of being personally attacked & insulted & denigrated for posting a link to a source that someone here isn't familiar with... & I still have not received an apology.

So, I'm going to continue posting. If that's good or bad, well, that's up to you to decide. My suggestion is, if I link to a source you're not familiar with, expand your information horizon beyond the familiar comfort zone of America-centric western-centric news & views. And for the love of God or whatever deity you regard as divine, don't react with personal attacks & insults when someone exposes you to a new source of information you weren't previously familiar with.

Thanks for listening to my rant...

anyone here wouldn't be aware of Stars n' Strips. I could *maybe* see someone complaining (incorrectly IMHO) about them being used as a source in LBN. Sorry if that happened to you.

When in doubt contact the MIRT member you feel most comfortable with. Here's where you can find the current MIR Team crew members.

On behalf of the jerk who insulted you, I apologize. Stay encouraged.
