It has been said that the only thing the "prevent defense" prevents is victory.
Seems like Obama and the DNC are playing prevent defense now.
Back in 2008, Obama had so many resources that he was running ads in Missouri. This year he/they seem to have written off Missouri.
In 2008, Team Obama had so many resources that they hired a field organizer for Leavenworth County, Kansas. The field organizer hired a "brat pack" of young kids who daily went door to door based on the organizer's walking lists, and there was a huge GOTV effort on election day.
The results were that Obama came very close to taking Missouri, losing by less than 5,000 votes.
Perhaps the political and financial reality is that Missouri is out of reach, but by not making a play for Missouri, that allows Romney to not have to spend resources in Missouri either. If you only play defense, then you are not putting pressure on their defense. And if you play safe defense, then you lose out on the opportunities that come from risks - the blitz that results in a sack, or a harried quarterback who makes a bad throw.
I have seen too many teams build up a lead in the first half, only to play scared or cautious in the second half and give away what should have been a victory. Like Terry Bradshaw said "you gotta keep doing what worked in the first half." Don't play scared to lose, play determined to win.

(42,770 posts)It's sad when you are in a red state and know you won't get to see anyone. But, it makes sense to fully concentrate of the states we have to have? Personally, I wouldn't waste a dime in Fl ever again, until there's a Dem Governor and a Dem Secy of State, and a Dem majority in state house.

(3,333 posts)OFA is on the attack in every swing state. They've nearly nullified the absentee ballot advantage the GOP had in Florida from 249,000 to 33,500, and that's in a state Obama won by nearly a quarter million in 2008.
Obama is pounding forward with an unmatched ground game. A Republican pundit recently compared Romney's ground game to an 8th grade civics course.
There's nothing at all defensive about Obama's campaign. He is on a constant and consistent attack and he is going to win.
And as far as Missouri goes, it was a purple state in 2008 but has been trending redder and redder for more than a decade. North Carolina is the opposite.
