(15,241 posts)The poster who said "Welcome to your opinion",
or the poster who said "welcome to reality"?
Both were dismissive of the other's viewpoint. Both seemed to have a valid point.
Why call them (or just one of them) rude?
I'm not wanting to add more kindling to this, but just want to know your reason for your unsupported comment.

(3,928 posts)better place? Are the dead Russian soldiers in hell for trying to follow phony orders from a tyrant? I've seen Skittles on DU for at least 16 years. She seems down to earth but will kick your ass.

(16,392 posts)The question of whether there is any sort of afterlife IS a matter of opinion. People may hold very strong opinions on the matter, but there is no way to prove empirically that there is or is not such a thing.
"Welcome to your opinion" was, imo, pointing out that this is a matter of opinion. Could this have been conveyed more tactfully? Sure, but the previous comment was not especially tactful, either.
"Welcome to reality" takes things a step further by implying that the existence of an afterlife is NOT a matter of opinion and "If you disagree with what I'm saying, YOU don't know what reality is." That is untrue, in addition to being dismissive, and, yes, rude.
It's simply incorrect to state categorically that an unprovable proposition is established fact. To do so in a way that implies anyone who doesn't see it the way you do crosses the line into rudeness, imo. What is or isn't rude is somewhat subjective, but that is how I see it.
I am REALLY not interested in arguing about whether that comment was rude. I see it as rude and recognize that not everyone will agree. I'm even less interested in arguing about the existence of an afterlife, as I find it an exercise in futility to argue about something that is, by its very nature, unprovable.

(3,512 posts)And do not deserve the blowback you are getting in this thread.
I find it repulsive that anyone would try to push a "silver lining" in the story of this woman who was murdered by the Russian forces. Especially when that "silver lining" is saying that she is better off dead. Sickening.

What a ridiculous way to belittle someone's life. Anybody that is killed/murdered: It's OK - they're in a good place.

but this is NOT the Atheists & Agnostics forum, and expressing a belief in an afterlife does not "belittle" someone's life.

The people always suffer for the crimes of a megalomaniac, but the world's people are drawing closer each day and the thought of imaginary boundaries and self-declared dictators is becoming less and less relevant.

(294 posts)That's harsh. Why should I delete my post? It's true and you know it. To demand that I delete it is actually Putinesque. Your own assertion seems to be devoid of any real analysis. Perhaps I missed it.

(118,642 posts)stories are getting out. It helps that so many speak English. Stories of people who have the same careers and ordered lives as we do. They live in tall apartment buildings. They have shelters for dogs. At every turn there is something that could very much be out of our own lives that is lost. I can last an hour on Ukrainian news. I can't watch a second on Yemeni news as children there are starving. That is the difference for me.

John Lennon was killed on a Monday night, back when I was working for a network catering to rock stations. It was THE story. There was NO other news that week on that format. We cranked on it all week. It took me til that Friday to cry.

(118,642 posts)on Mondays. Someone was killed by falling ice. I answered the phone all day and there were lots of people who knew her much better than I who took the calls from the writing community. The women who died was very close to the editor. The writing community was small in Ottawa. The phone rang all day with condolescences. I went out for lunch with a friend who was very close to the writer. Me and another woman tried to help her process because she was young. At some point the editor couldn't take any more calls and asked me to take messages. The afternoon went on and on. The editor got her second wind. She had been a mentor to the writer for years. The writer had blossomed late in life and was finally doing what she was born to do. I went home and cried and cried to my mom. It was so sad and shocking. And so hard to be around people in such pain. And so difficult to have a 38 year old colleague just disappear off this earth. I've since been through much harder things. But know the feeling of trying to be strong for others who are shocked and devastated.
