I expected to see today, or any day, really. Of all things to be jail-smuggled, Milk Duds wouldn't have been in my top 100 guesses. Obviously (and thankfully) I don't know him at all.

1. Why would he have to smuggle in Milk Duds?

I wouldn't think they're contraband. Just buy them if the prison offers them or have them sent.

3. He's being held in a medical unit of the LA County jail system awaiting trial in CA for other crimes

so I guess he doesn't have access to usual prison commissary stuff. [Here is where I will refrain from speculating how bullshit his medical complaints are]

And, also a guess, the issue may be simply that he got passed something surreptitiously by his lawyer. If the lawyer will do it for X thing, then they can't be trusted not to pass him Y thing, which might be truly dangerous or whatever.
