Organizers of the “People’s Convoy” are en route to circle their armada of trucks, cars and SUVs around the Beltway on Sunday morning and into the workweek at the minimum speed limit to slow traffic and get their message to lawmakers.

They plan to drive around the Beltway twice before returning to the Hagerstown Speedway, where the protesters have spent the weekend so far. The convoy, which recently numbered about 1,000 vehicles, intends to repeat that ritual each day this week until the group’s demands are met, said convoy organizer Brian Brase.

On Sunday morning, hundreds of protesters gathered to hear the details of the plan. After a pastor started things off by telling the group they were “heroes,” Brase instructed them to drive between 45 and 55 miles per hour and stay in one line to best show their size. The mostly White, mostly male protesters raised their coffees in salute.

Around 9:15 a.m., the caravan began rolling toward the Beltway, horns blaring.
The truckers’ goal “is a show of just how big we are and just how serious we are,” said Brase, a 37-year-old truck driver from northwest Ohio. “But it’s very easy to get rid of us.”

Virginia law states, "No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law." This means you must drive with the flow of traffic, unless weather conditions or other extenuating circumstances create a need for a reduced speed.

My daughter and I were on a road trip, driving in N.C., at one point the vehicle in front of us was going about 25 miles an hour on the highway with law enforcement behind us..

I sort of drove along off to the farthest right within the lane so he/she could see the culprit was the vehicle ahead of me.. They eventually got pulled over. I figured it had to be against traffic laws to drive at such a reduced speed under normal road conditions.

This was back in the 90's .

What do they hope to accomplish besides pissing a large number of people off. They are not exactly scary. Just a nuisance and right now a nuisance that seems so unimportant in light of what else is going on.

On Sunday these idiots will simply be a curiosity. Meanwhile, if they plan to do this on Monday, this is what normal rush hour looks like on the Beltway:

Not pictured: a dumbass convoy.

That's the nightmare crawl that tens of thousands of DMV residents already participate in on a daily basis. My guess is the toddler convoy will get stuck in this traffic for several hours on Monday morning and then be like, "We did it!"

Have fun, I guess.

Aptly put.

Back when I thought I cared I did a little “research” and given even a generous thousand protest vehicles and a quick check of the DoT stats showing 100s of thousands passing through the area daily. I realized even in their big old trucks they didn’t rate a grain in the flow. I didn’t care any more.

The only people paying any attention now seems to be the breathless reporting in the major and social media. Which is likely on autopilot with other real happenings out there.

I’m grateful to have the luxury of pointing and laughing on teh DU. Thanks for that privilege!

have laws against "convoying". I don't know about DC. These laws talk about violations if you organize vehicles purposely in such a way as to impede the normal flow of traffic. Obvious application to these nutters. Also there are Federal statutes about purposely interfering with interstate commerce. Purposely slowing down/impeding other trucks simply trying to do their job would fall under those statutes. Obviously organizing to obstruct traffic is also a safety issue. Emergency vehicles have a hard enough time getting through normal traffic in a quick manner let alone when people are purposely clogging the roads.

Also there are clear laws about "following distance" and the gap required between vehicles is fairly substantial. Some states specify distances and some leave it to the discretion of police. A few states post signs and some even paint dots on the road indicating the distance to keep apart. At highway speeds it is always a truck length or so. Cops have written many tickets over the years for "tail-gating", "unsafe operation" etc. and if they have the political will they can do so again. They should have the political will or we should find police administrators who do.

Are truckers actually forming a convoy in support of lower speed limits?
Or maybe a reduced speed limit only for trucks is what they are in support of.
With the increasing costs of fuel maybe this could be examined; being mindful of what is being asking for hasn't crossed their minds.

The act also prohibited the Department of Transportation from approving or funding any projects within states that did not comply with the new speed limit. Most states quietly adjusted their speed limits, though Western states, home to the country’s longest, straightest and most monotonous rural highways, only grudgingly complied. Even after OPEC lifted the embargo in March 1974, drivers continued to face high gas prices and attempted to conserve fuel by buying revolutionary Japanese economy cars.

They interviewed a spokesperson who said they weren't going to DC, but then a few truckers decided to do it anyway, theyay had their security prevent them from leaving. FREEDOM!

Fascists always think they're fighting for peace and freedom. They never think they're the fascists. Historically, where they lose their way is they start to think their group's freedoms matter than the freedom of others. There is about 25% of this country right now that would embrace full on authoritarianism all the while waving the flag and clutching their bibles.
