Police Chief Fired for Giving Promotions Based on Race, Gender: Report

AFlorida police chief was fired after allegedly giving promotions based on race and gender after serving on the force for only six months.

Police Chief Larry Scirotto, who formerly served as an assistant police chief in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, became Fort Lauderdale's first openly gay chief when the department hired him, according to local television news station WTVJ-TV.

However, he faced criticism after several police officers filed complaints alleging that he unfairly offered promotions based on race, gender and sexual orientation, according a copy of an investigation report sent to Newsweek from the Fort Lauderdale's city manager's office.

The investigation, which began in November, found that he once said a wall of photographs in a conference room was "too white" while pledging to "change that." He also allegedly said he wanted to "consider diversity at every opportunity," according to the report

Their greatest fear is losing control, and their outrage will only increase as they're forced to share power.

Might not have been the best approach, but he doesn't deserve to be called a deplorable, imo.

Eta the way I read it, he was hiring/promoting with an eye toward diversity, not against it.

I support diversification of staff, but there has to be a more elegant approach than "too white", even if that statement is true.

12. If you want to increase diversity, do so. No need to denigrate people

who are currently employed there as too white or whatever, or otherwise make stupid statements about who specifically you're going to hire and promote. Just do it (hopefully keeping in mind fairness, job performance and length of service), and shut up about it.

How many perfectly qualified applicants of color were passed over to make sure the photos in the conference room stayed white? An effort to diversify isn't reverse discrimination, it's playing catch-up for years of prejudice.
