We had to put my cat, Chairman Meow, to sleep this morning. I suspect he had a stroke yesterday since he suddenly had trouble walking, eating, and drinking, so it was time to say goodbye and let him go.
I found him as a stray kitten in the summer of 2006. I'm 99% certain he was part of a litter that someone didn't want, so they just dumped the kittens somewhere. I made kissy noises at him and he started following me. The girl I was dating at the time insisted that I retrieve him and take him to a shelter. I wrapped up him up in a bath towel to make sure he didn't bite/scratch, and when I got him upstairs and let him loose, he immediately ran over to me and climbed up into my lap... so I decided to keep him.
He was with me through a lot over the years. He was there when that girl dumped me, something I took very hard. He was there when I started a new relationship with the woman who's been my wife for over 10 years now. He was hyper-jealous of her. He was the vanguard of my move to Canada, making the move two years before I did. He was there through my struggles with substance abuse. He was there as I built a career and helped me relax after a rough day.
He was diagnosed with diabetes in 2017 because he was kind of a little sausage roll. My fault, I suppose, for letting him graze rather than feeding him at set times. The vet this morning told us that ordinarily cats only live 1-2 years after that diagnosis, so I suppose we did okay taking care of him.
He came into my life wrapped up in a bath towel, and he left it the same way. I held him in my arms as the vet gave him the shot and bawled my eyes out. My heart is breaking all over again as I type this. It's hard knowing that when I wake up tomorrow morning, he won't be sitting outside the bedroom door waiting for his breakfast.
Love your fur babies, folks. In a just world they'd live as long as people do, but unfortunately that's not the case. They give us all they have to give, and all they ask in return is a little love and a little kindness... and some treats here and there. They'll be gone before you know it.
A friend of mine said this when I talked to her about my loss, and I think it's rather beautiful, so I'll share it. "Grief is love with nowhere to go."
ETA: Thank you, everyone, for the kind words and good wishes. One of the greatest things about DU is that we're a family, and we share our joys and our griefs with family. Thank you for helping me through this rough moment, I appreciate it more than words can tell. Please give your fur babies a hug from me, in memory of the Chairman.

Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.
Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a worn-out coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another." - Irving Townsend

(2,475 posts)Diagnosed with heart disease 4 months ago, he was given 3 to 12 months. He hates when I give him his medications every day, but deep down I think (or at least hope) he knows I'm helping him live longer.
I feel your pain, and I hope it gets better as every day goes by.

(8,058 posts)It's so hard to lose your friend. My 8 year old kitty is going through similar issues, right now--I suspect either diabetes or kidney disease, taking her to the vet this week--she's still fairly young, though. I'm hoping a diet change or weight loss will help. Good luck to you.

(49,020 posts)knowing how much the loss has to hurt. I had to say good-bye to four senior cats, cats I'd had since they were tiny babies, between 2003 and last winter, and it felt each time as if they took part of my heart with them.
But I've heard that our loved ones also enlarge out hearts before they leave, so despite the pain, we're left with even more capacity to love, and even more understanding of it.
It sounds to me as if you and Chairman Meow rescued each other, as is so often the case. Those helpless furbabies we rescue turn out to be just what we needed, for years to come.
You gave him a great life here. And I believe there will be a reunion.

and times of hanging out as family.
Thank you, for sharing the story of Chairman Meow, It's hard, you'll never forget him. You did the right thing taking him in when he was little, as when you knew you had to let him go in peace. Remember the bond you had with him, and how his unique personality gave a special grace, that stays.

(3,238 posts)for your loss. Been where you are now three times and every time I hear of someone elses loss, the eyes tear up and I feel real pain. Stay strong in the light of the memories of Chairman Meow.
Sometimes youll sit alone at night
Thats when youll seem to lose the fight
To stay strong and see the light
That guides you to a better day
To help you bear the pain
That gets you to the place
Where memories can help you stay
Stay strong in the light of those beautiful memories.

All my sympathies, Jedi Guy. I've been there, myself. So many of us have had to walk that path.

(24,024 posts)...into our lives knowing full well that we will likely outlive them, but we do it anyway, because life is so much better with them in it.
The poignant words, "Grief is love with nowhere to go," describes so perfectly how it feels, and is very similar to what I have often said - "Love with nothing to attach to." It is why I, oftener than not, welcome a new cat into the family very soon after having had to say goodbye to an former cat.
I always think and speak of them as successors, not replacements. The same vet said that offering a loving homw to a new cat is a lovely way to honor the predecessor.
Chairman Meow was obviously well and deeply loved.

(205,731 posts)My dog who I adopted from rescue at 5 months turns 16 this month. And though he's fine except for a recurring ear infection (going to the vet for a scheduled exam on Tuesday), I admit that I'm scared. I've been in recovery since 2008 and have never lost a pet since I've been sober.
And yes, our pets are with us through so much. Someone once said that losing a pet is the hardest since they're always with you. The only helpful words that I have to offer is to remember that the Chairman was so incredibly fortunate that he had you...

Grief Poem
Contributed by Chaplin Robert Orr - Kindred Hospice
Grief is the last act of love we give to our loved one.
Where there is deep grief there is great love. Grief is a great rite of
passage, it is a heros journey of courage, of sacred battles, sorrow,
love, joy and loss.
Through the darkness of grief we can see the light of love which
transcends death. And with the pain can come gratitude for the gift of
time we had, the love that was shared and the power to become a
better person because they loved us.
