U.S., NATO Reject Intervening in Ukraine

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine widens and the humanitarian crisis deepens, the U.S. and NATO have continued to resist entering the conflict directly.

“NATO is not party to the conflict. NATO is a defensive alliance,” Jens Stoltenberg, secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, said Friday ahead of an emergency gathering of the alliance’s foreign ministers in Brussels. “We don’t seek war, conflict with Russia.”

With Russian forces broadening their assault on Ukraine and reports of civilian casualties mounting, calls continue for an immediate cease-fire and withdrawal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed for a no-fly zone over the country—a move that has found at least some support among a small number of U.S. lawmakers—but President Biden and allied leaders have rejected the move as escalatory.

Speaking to reporters in Brussels, Mr. Stoltenberg pushed back against calls for NATO to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine to slow the fighting. “Allies agreed we should not have NATO planes operating over Ukrainian airspace or NATO troops on Ukrainian territory,” he said.

but, that being said, he's right, NATO is a defensive alliance and I still oppose direct intervention in Ukraine, but my mind can be changed.

As someone who has experienced war up front & personal, I want to give Pres. Biden the time necessary to let the sanctions destroy the Russian economy without direct combat against Russian forces, but, if Russia even places a boot on NATO soil, then, by all means necessary, decimate the Russian military.

Without military intervention. I am all in favor of arming Ukraine, sending supplies, sharing Intel, etc.

That said NATO is a hard border. Any attack upon a NATO member should be responded in kind. If Belarusian troops cross the border, go into Belarus. If Russian troops cross push them back to Russia.
