"I've got a 60-80 mile commute (each way) because I could afford a much bigger/better house in city X than I could in city Y"

Yeah, housing prices in the Bay Area, LA, and many other places are ridiculous. But so are some people's judgements about how much house/yard they need to be happy, and how much time they're willing to spend in their car every weekday (which is time they can't spend in the house in question, btw). People can waste their time however they like, but spare me the complaints about how expensive your chosen time wasting is becoming.

The local paper had a man-on-the-street type of anecdote in their gas price article this morning. I nearly rolled my eyes out of my head when, after complaining that the rising gas prices were going to wipe out the raise he recently got, the guy revealed he had a 150 mile round trip daily commute and drove a newish vehicle which got 15-20 mpg.

Ya makes your choices and ya takes your chances. When you purposely increase your exposure to the price volatility of a commodity, bad episodes get worse.

What's wrong with being a little more practical? I remember that when we moved, my parents found my school first. THEN, after that part was settled, they started looking for a house. A house near the school.

Either because they're rich enough to not mind paying more for their housing, or because they prioritize lower emissions.

https://de.fuelo.net/ (great site)

Sweden (we live in Stockholm) and Germany are usually very close in price, and that is around what it is here too.

here is the price the day (March 7th) you made the 10 usd per US gallon claim

2.162 € per litre

converting to USD per US gallon

3.78541 litres per US gallon, so

8.184 € per US gallon

which is $8.90 per US gallon, at current Euro to USD FOREX

I’m not bitching.

It’s cheap here by world standards and the US dollar only has 1/10th of its 1965 purchasing power.
