He wants Ukraine and is determined to get it. The fighting will get much worse and will last a long time since he will not negotiate or quit. He is single minded.

…that, once they conquer Ukraine (?), most countries/corporations will decide “What’s the point? It’s over, and sanctions are hurting our own economy” and go back to business-as-usual within a few months. Not everyone, of course, but enough to end the current situation.

homeland, the more unsettled the people, and the more likely his inner circle will force him out. Already, his billionaire buddy Oligarchs must be calling him, telling him that he needs to pull out. Money talks, and these sanctions, and the collapsing Ruble and Russian stock market is brutal.

He is probably a broken man, knowing how much harm has been done to Russia and seeing the way he is portrayed as a monster among those he thought respected him. He must be paranoid, not knowing who is plotting to take him out. He has no good options, but the best is to quickly go, or announce a timetable for his departure.

A week-long bog-down, and Russian soldiers going through the meatgrinder, doesn't even raise his brow.

Unfortunately I don't see an off-ramp short of a very lucky stroke or hero Russian General sending him to his dirt nap.

That said those around him may feel, at some point, they would be better off if he were. Those who worship money and power will turn on a dime against someone who risks making it all go away.

Any compromise would make Putin lose face which he will not permit.

(I know he has no honor to lose but you have to look at it from his point of view.)
