General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe GOP is drooling at the idea of higher gas prices before the mid-terms.
Look at how suddenly the idiot truck drivers changed their mission from masks to gas prices.
They didn't think of that on their own: some GOP think tank politician contacted them and told them to change themes.
I don't even trust Moscow Mitch and how he was pressing President Biden to increase sanctions on Russia.
Republicans always have an agenda. And that agenda is always meant to bring more money to the rich, and more power to the GOP.
McConnell, trump, desantantis...they don't give a flying frock about America, only about the rich.
And by the way, expect some terrible refinery explosions, off-shore oil spills or tanker spills in the next few months.

(20,544 posts)with my brother-in-law. He was blaming Biden for the gas price increase even though he had release gas from the reserves. Why do RWers think the government controls prices when it is the corporations that set prices on everything.

(1,924 posts)that level of thinking is beyond their comprehension.
"It's Biden's fault" is a response not unlike Pavlov's dog salivating.

This represented three percent of US crude oil imports and one percent of the total crude oil processed by US refineries. By contrast, the US imported 61 percent of its crude oil from Canada, 10 percent from Mexico, and six percent from Saudi Arabia in the same year.

(3,164 posts)Oil, like all commodities is subject to supply and demand. The government has no control, really, on the price of a barrel of oil.
Another thing I've heard lately: "We" should stop buying oil from Russia. Do these people think that the government is in charge of where the oil comes from? We as a country don't buy oil - private oil companies do that. Those companies have the power to stop buying from Russia, but they won't, so a law would be necessary to ban purchases from Russia, as far as I know.
One other thing - didn't we used to have a law that domestic oil could not be exported? I think that law may have been repealed at some point, but it needs to be reinstated. Like it or not, oil is still going to be a huge part of our economy for the foreseeable future.

(2,234 posts)The GOP never mentions the amount of oil the US exports or why we export oil or why we import oil. It's not like the US is the only country in the world that has to import crude.

(42,666 posts)then we are are going to likely be flayed alive in the midterms.
The party of the sitting POTUS almost always gets (fairly or unfairly) the blame, followed usually by a right proper bollocksing at the ballot box.
Combine Manchin/Sinema's obstructionism leading to no voter projection bills and likely no BBB, along with historical tends for 1st midterms and Rethug's massive new wave of voter suppression, lying, etc, and it is a grim outlook atm.
Of course, Ukraine is a HUGE wild card, so it is far from etched in stone.

Perhaps Venezuelan oil will start flowing to the U.S. again.

(4,416 posts)$125 a barrel tends to bring out more production.
Emile
(21,903 posts)there a reason for that?
Oil companies slashed production because demand plummeted. Over the last few months demand is returning to pre-pandemic levels, so production is as well. It took months to slash the production, as well it takes months to increase it. We are expected to be there later this year.

(18,745 posts)The war in Ukraine means that the money Putin was funneling to Republican candidates is gone, it also means that the propaganda network Russians were running for the GOP is kaput too.
As we watched Trump being backed up by social media that was in lock step with him in 2016, and then we found out the majority of that social media was Russian generated, it was obvious Trump wouldn't have beaten Hillary without Putin's help. And so it accelerated, GOP leader after GOP leader made trips to Russia to meet with propagandists there. The entire party got in lock step with the Russian troll farms, the level of collusion made the 2 indistinguishable in message from one another.
I said it during the 2016 campaign, the collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian trolls farms was too organized and timely for there not to be complete integration between the two. In other words, the Trump campaign was working with the Russians daily to stay on message, to support each other, and to time everything. "Many people are saying xxx" was Trump acknowledging the Russian troll farms. This type of coordination took probably daily meetings with Russians, they probably shared plans and white boards with each other, Trump would start talking about the next line of propaganda sometimes before Russians had launched it. You don't run a campaign without constant communication on messaging.
And then the last 5 years, it became the whole GOP, their message is centered around using Russian troll farms to get their message out. From Hunter Biden's laptop, to anti vax nonsense, to inflation memes, the GOP has been supported by an extensive network of foreign generated propaganda on social media. Now supporting Russia publicly isn't kosher for them, and they must pretend to be tough on Russia. That troll farm help is either dried up or about to totally dry up, the GOP is going to have to go into the midterms without Russian bot help, something they have built their entire party around. It's bound to be a struggle for them.
