A French restaurant says it's received threats based on confusion around its namesake dish.

A French restaurant says it's received threats based on confusion around its namesake dish.
Poutine, fries doused in cheese curds and gravy, has nothing to do with Putin, it said.
Businesses around the world have been pressured to cut ties with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
A restaurant in France seeks to clear its name after fielding confusion surrounding poutine, its signature dish — fries doused with cheese curds and gravy — and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the leader who announced an invasion into Ukraine just over a week ago.

La Maison de la Poutine, or The House of Poutine, tweeted on Friday that it received "calls of insults and even threats" over its namesake dish.

"It, therefore, seems necessary for us to recall that La Maison de la Poutine is unrelated to the Russian regime and its leader," the tweet read. It featured the restaurant's logo, a heart emoji, and the Ukrainian flag.

The French romanticize the 'voyageurs', the same way Americans romanticize cowboys.

this idiot is does the ticket and this problem goes away. Once again we see that fear and anger tend to bring an "inner Putin" out in some people. Like those here who angrily call for government oppression, including arrests, to erase the trucker convoys.

My husband and I ordered poutine for lunch when visiting upstate New York. Easy to see how it could be a comfort food, especially in a cold climate, but for us it was a chance to enjoy tryihng something we'd only heard of while looking out over a beautiful lake.

And they're not being funny--I checked an article in Le Monde and they also name him Vladimir Poutine.

Is that really too much to ask? I mean, I would love say this is so totally some sort psyops and this was totally some pro-Putin types making the threats to change the narrative. Which I suppose is possible, but it's just as possible that there some really ignorant people out there who think harassing people who they believe are Russian is somehow helpful.
