(45,616 posts)Putin's goal is to have a world autocratic order, democracies are evil in is mind.
Also, I would think that Putin wants Zelensky gone or deeply humiliated.

(38,958 posts)My terms would be to Russia.
1). All Russian troops withdrawn.
2). Return of Crimea and all seized lands.
3). Reparations + for all damages done to the Ukrainian state, property and people.
4). A demilitarized border on the Russian side.
5). No interference with Ukraine on its choices to join any alliances.

(38,958 posts)first and final offer. The Reparations + would be payment for all damages public and private along with punitive amounts sufficient enough to place the Russian economy in the toilet for the next several decades. But, as I said I have no say in the matter and it is up to the folks with skin in the game.

(7,753 posts)...We've learned from Putler that:
1) You can change your constitution at will when it suits your needs
2) After you recognize a territory, you can "unrecognize" it
3) See #2
Now get the fuck out!

(16,949 posts)Crush the Russian economy the same way he is crushing the buildings in Ukraine. He is not to be trusted. This is nothing more than an excuse to inflict more damage without consequence. Im sure he is counting on having control of Kiev by then. Biden should tell him to take his oil and shove it.

(11,986 posts)Back I believe in 1994 Ukraine made a concession to Russia with the support of USA and UK. In that agreement, Ukraine agreed to give up all nuclear weapons therefor the Russians agreed to recognize Ukrainian independence.
Well that didn't work out well did it.

Of course, negotiators don't often have the luxury of indulging gut feel.

(6,508 posts)These are meaningless conditions.
They haven't held to their previous committments to Ukraine already, why would Ukraine think these were serious negotiations?
And, in any case, at best, it's an admission that they are failing.

(15,246 posts)this is a significant step back right off the bat.
If it's correct that Putin planned for just a two week invasion, the Russian Army might be running out of supplies and equipment even without the strong Ukrainian resistence. He's is now asking for help from Syria and sending mercenaries. Imho, that implies Russian troop losses might be significant.
The US and NATO allies are now unloading huge cargo planes full of anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles and rockets each day headed for the Ukrainian Army. And yesterday, the US gave the OK for NATO countries to send aircraft to Ukraine which would help neutralize, but not eliminate, the Russian bombing campaign against civilian targets.
Not to mentions sanctions are wrecking havoc on the Russian economy.
A united NATO/Western/European front, heavy sanctions taking their toll, determined and fierce Ukrainian resistance, the Russian Army's lackluster performance means Putin is not negotiating from a position of strength.
