Donald Trump was recorded describing Vladimir Putin as his friend in a bizarre phone conversation with pro golfer John Daly.
You know, he was a friend of mine, the former president told the athlete on speaker phone, as recorded in a viral video. I got along great with him.
Mr Daly is a Republican and staunch supporter of Mr Trump. As the ex-president spoke to the golfer, Mr Trump repeated a claim that hes made frequently in recent weeks: that if he were still president, Russias leader wouldnt dare invade Ukraine.
Id say, Vladimir, if you do it, were hitting Moscow, the one-term president bragged to Mr Daly. I said, Were gonna hit Moscow. And he sort of believed me, like five per cent, 10 per cent. Thats all you need. He never did it during my time, John.

What a pathetic, insecure little man. Did you ever notice that when referring to a foreign leader, he often adds, "He is a friend of mine"? Basically confirming that Trump never had any real friends, sycophants and parasites, but no true friends.

(46,918 posts)Narcissists like to curry favor with important people so they can feel important themselves. They also like constant attention and accolades.
You can also see how world's despots must have worked Trump by laying it on thick about being personal friends with him. An easy way to manipulate Trump. He is a buffoon and so easily bought off.

(47,399 posts)He is so readable, that savvy tyrants use him much like he uses others. Of course, he is too self-absorbed and dimwitted to see it. Once again his "daddy" issues come to the surface, always trying to please a powerful father.

(46,918 posts)And get the approval he never got from his father. On top of his narcissistic and sociopath personalty disorders.
I am sure the leaders had excellent psych profiles on Trump and played him like a fiddle.
Tump has some cunning, but he is really not bright at all. No insight at all about himself or others. Of course they laughed at him.
This is one of the reasons Putin got Trump elected. To make US democracy look foolish and ridiculous. To make a mockery of our leadership and people.
PatSeg
(47,399 posts)Yes, particularly Putin. That is his specialty, something he mastered in his KGB days.
I agree that in some ways Trump is cunning. He has some street-smart killer instincts, but they are very limited. They might work in the real estate business or reality television, but he was so out of his league on a world stage.
Sadly, like so many people, he sought out an approval he was never going to get and now his oldest son lives with that same dilemma.
Putin did manage to make the U.S. look foolish and insubstantial, but it was only temporary. He really did underestimate our democracy, at least so far anyway. It will be quite awhile before we can truly assess the damage he has done and whether any of it is permanent. I am not certain yet.

(46,918 posts)I am not sure what will happen to the US. I hope you are right.
I think the damage to the US by Trump, GOP congress, and GOP officials is enormous.
PatSeg
(47,399 posts)Our majorities in congress are much too slim and republicans keep nominating more screwballs to elective office. I try to stay optimistic, but it isn't easy.
We always have such interesting discussions!

I am too much of a realist to be optimistic, sad to say.
But I like your optimism! It is important to stay positive when trying to achieve a goal.

Irish_Dem
(46,918 posts)Yes it does feel like pre-WWII Europe.
And it has been clear for some time the Putin was heavily involved in US politics. And where it would all end is a big question mark. The GOP and US oligarchs seem hell bent on taking over our country.
Maybe we should just take up a nice soothing hobby?
PatSeg
(47,399 posts)Yes, even though in some respects history is repeating itself, a lot of what we're seeing is unprecedented.
It might be better if the right-wing extremists and conspiracy theorists took up a nice soothing hobby!

(63,221 posts)He thinks because he spoke to someone once or twice that they are "great, great friends". He doesn't have the slightest clue what a friend is. It's all about image to him.
He will claim "friendship" with someone if he thinks it makes him look more important, not having the tiniest understanding as to what a friendship really is. It's so bizarre and really kind of sad.
Irish_Dem
