Here are some Monday morning thoughts about our gas prices at the pump. These are more. What are yours?
1. In years past we had windfall taxes on . . . . yup . . . . oil companies. Time to consider that again. On the other hand, maybe use tax policy to incentivize them to REDUCE prices back to pre-war levels, or even lower.
2. Use the Defense Production Act to achieve the same effect.
3. Cancel the Bloated Tick's Venezuelan and Iranian bans. Negotiate with both countries to reduce our costs here and in Europe.
4. Develop programs to make mass transit so attractive it would be silly not to use it.

(50,774 posts)But on the other hand, there is this: I guarantee that at the end of the year, gas companies will all post great profits for their shareholders and the executives will get bonuses that are equivalent to the salaries of multiple families living in the bottom 99% of our country.
The windfall tax is a great idea. So are the rest, but the windfall tax will prevent unnecessary gouging.
I also think there should be some thought given to gas vouchers for people who make less than a certain amount and don't have access to mass transit.

(31,688 posts)I know this will probably sound silly - but I live 15 miles away from the closest train station in NJ.
Once upon a time we had depot and stop in our town.

(67,697 posts)That sort of connector is really attractive to allow more users to choose Amtrak or other rail service.
I'll bet a lot of the rail beds are still there and could be reactivated, even if not with catenary.

(3,164 posts)The entire area of Pennsylvania/New Jersey/NYC/Boston is the area that would benefit the most from MORE mass transit.
I was really surprised when I visited NYC in 2019 that there isn't a train from Newark airport into Manhattan. We rode a bus, which is fine, but buses can't carry the amount of passengers that trains can.
I was also surprised that there isn't a subway route to LaGuardia airport. That seems insane to me in this day and age.
Anyway, I live in a mostly rural/small town area. Mass transit will never happen here!
