The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol previewed its likely referral to the Justice Department in a court filing made public last week and experts say the evidence assembled by House investigators would provide a strong impetus for prosecutors to act.
But Republican lawmakers and strategists warn that any federal prosecution of Trump will be accused of being politically motivated, boost Trump within the GOP and turn into a partisan food fight at a time when President Biden is pivoting to the center and trying to keep his 2020 campaign promise to unify the country.
Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) said any criminal referral from the House would probably have as much political taint on it as you can get.

(95,247 posts)They'll do the worst they can whatever we do, providing we do not defeat them. There is no point in refraining from anything because the enemy might do it back.
Grant at The Wilderness told his staff he was tired of hearing what Lee might do, and told them to start thinking about what could be done to Lee. Our people need the same spirit.

(16,095 posts)what more could they do? They obstruct literally everything, they spread false narratives constantly, and they threaten to put everyone in prison who isn't on their side.
What more could they do?
Theyve never hesitated to use a political weapon yet. Nothing has been off the table for them.

(22,035 posts)Why would anyone make such a statement unless they knew there were criminal acts.
So what if it sparks political unrest? Last year, we watched an act of ultimate political unrest when Trump supporters tried to overthrow our government.
The Republicans are afraid of what will be uncovered if a real investigation digs into their funding and supporters.
Merrick Garland is at a crossroad where he could be an American patriotic hero or he could be a goat.
We'll see.

(16,254 posts)Some of the most concerned are probably jerks like Gym Jordan, Hawley, Gosar, Bo, etc. Truth be known, there are too many with their fingers in this fiasco to even recall by name, and that doesn't touch those 700 or so clowns that are presently being charged/sentenced.
Why do those lawmakers and strategists feel they can warn us about retaliation? They actually feel they have an ounce of food for a fight?
Dream on. Your blubbering is getting old.

Scare with outlandish threats and hope they take the bait and back off. That's their strategy.
Like Putin is losing - so are the Repugs.
It's only a matter of time - we'll be rid ourselves of both.

Uhm hold a rally in DC and send their ignorant right wing base to overthrow the capitol? Oh yeah did that too. Wait maybe they will try to disenfranchise 10s of thousands of people of color across the country by passing undemocratic voting laws... uhmm... take away women's rights to their own bodies? Legislate against teachers in classrooms for telling kids historical truths... uhm .. they could nominate the most vile despicable ignorant racist POS on the planet for president... ehhh yeah been done... or maybe bully transgendered children in grade schools... I dunno... "political war" sounds pretty bad better watch your back Merrick Garland!
