IRPIN, Ukraine The bridge was just a shell of its old self, blown up days earlier by Ukrainian soldiers intent on slowing the Russian advance on the capital, Kyiv, but battered as it was, it offered a lifeline to civilians desperate to flee the fighting.
On Sunday, as Ukrainian refugees were milling near the entrance to the structure, calculating their odds of making it safely over the Irpin River, a family laden with backpacks and a blue roller suitcase decided to chance it.
The Russian mortar hit just as they made it across into Kyiv.

(58,598 posts)They've been doing this for years in Syria, Chechnya, and other places around the world.
Recently, it dates from WWII, when they learned it as a reprisal to the NAZI brutalities of their invasion of Russia. Now that the brutality is aimed at a more "western" nation with a higher proportion of "white" people in it, it gets more publicity. Hopefully the increased focus on it will lead to a tempering of the actions.
But then, we humans are surprisingly capable of inflicting brutality on each other. It has been true since the beginnings of history.

NYT puts it on their front page. I don't know what conclusion to draw from that.

(86,323 posts)I mean it, there is no excuse for such an entity to exist in this world at this time in space.
They have never been anything more than barbarians and that is being proven, on steroids, in Ukraine now.
I call for the dissolution of russia, period. This is more than enough to prove that that country cannot be accepted as is any longer among those of us in the rest of the world who want no more wars. Only despots and tyrants are in favor of their actions and half of them do so out of fear. I can't see how any other resolve can end the aggression that country is all about.
