Why Is Ukraine's Internet Still Up? Perhaps Because the Invaders Need It

One prevailing theory among defense experts is that Russia is relying on the network to conduct its attack.

“Putting a communications network together, other than radios, is actually really hard,” said John Ferrari, a retired Army two-star general-turned-non-resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Ferrari noted the U.S. Army’s own struggles to develop WIN-T, a joint expeditionary communications network.

He said Russian forces are likely navigating and communicating via cell phones and local internet connections.

“So I think they felt that they were going to go in there and ride that communication network. And you see it, right? You see the reports coming out of them using cell phones and local internet connections,” he said.

Much more interesting info at link.

"Gray is considered the founder of Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion, although he never commanded the unit under that name. In 1955 Gray was tasked with forming Marine units to serve at Naval Security Group (NSG) sites. Gray commanded the Marine Detachment at NSG Kamiseya, Japan from 1956 to 1958.[9]

In May 1964 he commanded the Signal Engineering Survey Unit, the radio detachment consisted of three officers and 27 enlisted men drawn from the 1st Radio Company, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific and from Headquarters Marine Corps supported by a 76-man infantry detachment from Company G, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, which deployed to Danang Air Base, South Vietnam. The unit established communication facilities at Khe Sanh, Tiger Tooth Mountain (Dong Voi Mẹp) (16.768°N 106.713°E), Monkey Mountain and Bạch Mã. The unit left South Vietnam in mid-September 1964.[10]"

For several reasons.

Around the Zaporizhzh'a plant the 'net's killed. The IAEA has no connection to the power plant.

Over 500k Ukr are without power. In some areas, substations have been targeted or power plants put out of commission. Note that a cold front's moving in and that means no power or heat for those folk. "Gee, thanks Uncle Putin." (My concern is that it'll freeze the ground and that north-of-Kyiv convoy can move again.)

Note that there's a concerted drive to get out the word that if a Ru soldier's taken your cell phone, *report it asap* so it can be disabled.

But Elon Musk's Starlink modules have to be doing something besides displacing atmosphere.
