McDonald's and Coca-Cola boycott calls grow over Russia

BBC

Pressure is growing on Western food and drink giants to pull out of Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.

McDonald's and Coca-Cola have been criticised on social media for failing to speak out about the attacks and continuing to operate in the country.

Well-known firms including Netflix and Levi's have already suspended sales or stopped providing services in Russia.

McDonald's and Coca-Cola have not responded to the BBC's request for comment.

But do, or did know a touch about McDonald's Russia.

The franchise is owned by George Cohon, a Canadian who also owns the Canadian McDonald's. His father was a Ukrainian Jew. Also, all the product that McDonald's Russia uses is sourced in Russia.

We designed an A/V system for his silo at his form north of Toronto in the mid-1970s, George was very friendly, spent a great deal of time with the design & install. Did some more work for him in the 1990s, again was very affable, spent a great deal of time trying to explain Russia & doing biz in Russia, something none of us were interested in at the time. Regardless, a very nice man treated us as equals.

This might be a situation where the owner cares more about his staff & customers than the politics of hurting putin.

Following social media pressure, McDonald's joins companies suspending business in Russia

McDonald's is the latest multinational giant to announce it's pausing business operations in Russia to protest the country's invasion of Ukraine.

The fast food chain, along with other multinational giants such as PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, have faced mounting pressure on social media to cut ties with Russia due to their large footprint in the country.

On Tuesday, McDonald's announced in a statement that it will temporarily close its more than 800 restaurants and pause all operations in Russia. The U.S.-based chain said it will continue to pay salaries of the 62,000 Russian employees who will be affected by the closure.

9. I'm actually fine with these two particular corporations continuing to do business inside Russia.

I can't think of a better nation to consume the health-destroying detritus these two sleazy corporations peddle. In fact, we should threaten boycott them if they don't agree to sell their lab-created, artery clogging frankenfeces to Russia at a significantly discounted price. If every Russian consumed a couple of Big Macs and cokes a day they'd be too fat and unhealthy to attack their neighbors.

McDonalds will pause its Russia business

The fast good company McDonalds has announced it will temporarily close its restaurants in Russia, following intense pressure to take a stand over the Kremlin-ordered invasion of Ukraine.

In a statement the company said: “our values mean we cannot ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine.”

McDonalds said it employed 62,000 people in Russia who had “poured their heart and soul” into the brand. It promised to continue to pay its employees in Russia and Ukraine.

The decision of the fast-food chain to temporarily pause its operations in Moscow is a landmark moment in Russia’s deepening economic isolation.

McDonalds was one of the first western companies to open a branch in Russia in the dying days of the Soviet Union. Thousands of Muscovites queued to get a taste of the west, when the first McDonalds opened in January 1990.
