on Russian history. My takeaway was that not only do they seem to make the same mistakes over and over, but the mistakes get worse and worse. It was very depressing.

Russia and its history seem to make it difficult for anybody to successfully govern and they don't have much history of democracy either and seem to perpetuate some form of autocracy/authoritarianism.
