following intense pressure to take a stand over the Kremlin-ordered invasion of Ukraine. In a statement the company said: our values mean we cannot ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine.
McDonalds said it employed 62,000 people in Russia who had poured their heart and soul into the brand. It promised to continue to pay its employees in Russia and Ukraine.
The decision of the fast-food chain to temporarily pause its operations in Moscow is a landmark moment in Russias deepening economic isolation.
McDonalds was one of the first western companies to open a branch in Russia in the dying days of the Soviet Union. Thousands of Muscovites queued to get a taste of the west, when the first McDonalds opened in January 1990.
