US president Joe Biden banned Russian oil imports on March 8 in response to Russias Ukraine invasion. The move will likely push gasoline prices to new highs, but most Americans are willing to pay them, according to a new Quinnipiac University national poll.
Overall, 71% of Americans supported a ban on Russian oil even if it resulted in higher gas prices, according to the survey, which was conducted from March 4 to 6. Oil was trading around $130 a barrel on Tuesday, while a regular gallon of gasoline was an average $4.17 at the pump.
Democrats were the most likely to back the ban, but the support rates were also high for independents and Republicans.
Support for Ukraine
The majority of Americans78%were also in favor of accepting Ukrainian refugees into the US, and 64% had a favorable view of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has emerged as a hero figure over his handling of the conflict.

(14,061 posts)Not every metro area has one, mine included. There were plans for one awhile ago
there were serviceable, unused railroad tracks that could have been converted for commuter trains to downtown, but REPUBLICANS outlawed any plans or money for such a project. Now the tracks have been ripped up for a walk/bike trail. Im still very frosty over that. If I had an alternative to my car, Id ditch it in a heartbeat.
We must begin thinking of alternatives.

(2,138 posts)Sure, they support it in the abstract, but once it actually happens, what then? Especially after Faux News goes into full outrage mode
As for me, I accept the high probability of gas prices going up, with the Ukraine war as an excuse. After all, People overseas pay as much as $10/gallon.

(8,353 posts)I filled my tank today, it was already a quarter full but we have a trip tomorrow. I think the total was $56. My heart broke because before I started pumping, the amount on the pump from the previous customer was $10. About 3 gallons worth. I thought about the person who couldnt afford to fill their car and how the price of gasoline is going to keep some people from eating.

(36,739 posts)My Chevy Cruze gets 30 mpg around town and about 41-45 mpg on long trips.
$10-$12 easily tops off my tank from 3/4 tank.

(14,061 posts)State Dem legislators in Indiana proposed that, but the Republicans voted it down. Predictably. They would vote no on a cure for cancer if it had a D after it.
Is Biden considering releasing some of the reserves?

(14,061 posts)I wish I knew how to post a meme I saw the other day:
If prices go up at the pump
its temporary fallout. Think of it as the price of freedom. You arent sitting on a concrete floor in a train terminal holding your cat.
My inconvenience is nothing in the face of what Ukranians are dealing with.

(18,744 posts)It's about $1 high right now per gallon, big deal. Gas is usually around $3 an hour, and now it's $4 an hour or so. Americans are whiners, can you imagine this group sacrificing to win WWII when $1 more a gallon for gasoline is sending them into tantrums?
