Many here on DU, myself included, often/occasionally bitch about the mainstream media. But they are doing a brilliant job in covering Ukrainian refugees.
On site journalists know it's not enough to talk about and view countless refugees fleeing Putin. Rather, they are interviewing individuals, and letting them share what they've gone through. It's impossible to hold back tears while listening to the struggles, helplessness and hopelessness of those carrying children, everything they own, and not knowing where or when they will next obtain water, food, shelter, or safety.
Most of us can't watch this too long. I'm certain millions of dollars are being donated and are, hopefully, supplying basic necessities to these people.
I don't know what Fox "news" is covering, but the networks, CNN and MSNBC are making any feeling, sane person aware of what it's like to lose your home, everything you own, and your way of life. It's devastating.

(82,849 posts)And I'm glad for it. Our people really need to get familiar with what happens to people in a war zone, and it doesn't really matter if the war zone was created by Russia or someone else.

(21,447 posts)Mehgna Chakrabarti, the host of On Point, devoted her entire program today to the hardships of the average Russian person suffering from sanctions.
Her guests pointed out the need for the sanctions and how they are working, but Meghna continued to push the idea that sanctions against Russia are not stopping Putin and are hurting the Russian people.
It's a switch from her usual bashing of Biden over Afghanistan and bashing Dems in general.
On Point used to be a good program before Mehgna took over. It used to do some in depth coverage on current events. Now the coverage is shallow and pro Republican, although she has opposed the Big Lie and the J6 coup attempt.

(32,634 posts)They are temporarily (or permanently) out of money. That leaves the internet open for the rest of us to use and spread real information around. Suddenly the news media care about telling the real stories. Isn't it great? It probably won't last long, but I'm enjoying it for as long as I can.

(15,035 posts)We need every respectable media entity in the world to turn against Putin. The fascist media propaganda machine is powerful. Seems that Putin has awakened whatever conscience still exists in true journalism.

(15,536 posts)there's always a certain segment of our country that will see it and still say, "What do I care about those people as long as it's not me or my family."
Thankfully, the majority of us have some empathy and care enough to help.

Sometimes Americans need a good whack upside the head to pay attention..

There have been so many times I thought that one thing or another would wake Americans up, but I was always disappointed in the long run. Remember the housing collapse? I thought for sure they'd quit pining for the 3,000 sq. ft. houses and be happy with a small ranch or something. But didn't take long before the big houses started going up in my area once again. The last time under Dubya when gas prices soared I thought Americans would stop buying Hummers and big ass SUV's and go back to sensible cars once again, but nope. And let's not forget 9/11 where everyone was "all in this together". I remember hearing that and saying, "no, we aren't".
Americans don't "do" sacrifice.

Hell, cant keep track anymore. The images pierce the heart. Especially video and photos of the little ones. And the evacuees clutching beloved pets.

(424 posts)Other than Ali Velshi, I have little respect for the MSM.
They did a horrible job covering Syria. A horrible job covering Afghanistan, A horrible job covering Trump, they let repubs off the hook, they let each other off the hook.
If they did a semi-decent job over the last twenty-five years, this world, including them, would be in a much better place.

I know what it is like to lose home, family, school, country all in one week - that's hard enough, but then add in the bombs and.....
