Blinken says NATO countries have "green light" to send fighter jets to Ukraine"That gets a green-light," Blinken said in an interview with "Face the Nation" when asked whether the Polish government, a member of NATO, could send fighter planes to Ukraine. "In fact, we're talking with our Polish friends right now about what we might be able to do to backfill their needs if in fact they choose to provide these fighter jets to the Ukrainians. What can we do? How can we help to make sure that they get something to backfill the planes that they are handing over to the Ukrainians?"

But transferring the planes via Ramstein Air Base is not acceptable because that would mean the U.S was sending fighter planes to Ukraine, and that does not have a green light because the U.S. in not a NATO member?
But wait, there's more. After Blinken made his statement to the world, "A White House spokesperson told CBS News the Biden administration is evaluating the capabilities it could provide to backfill jets to Poland if it decided to transfer planes to Ukraine but noted there are several questions that arise from a decision to do so, including how the jets could be transferred from Poland to Ukraine. "
Guess those questions have not been answered.

(24,561 posts)but this is not making sense to me. It's good that it's President Biden's decision and not mine.

I don't know what the heck happened here, but I think the public has a right to know what is going on.

Poland came upon with, - 'we will send the planes to Ramstein', apparently without consulting NATO or the U.S. My take - CYA. If the planes can't be delivered, don't blame Poland.

(47,000 posts)It does sound like Blinken made some sort of error. Maybe he and Poland came up with the Ramstein plans but did not clear it with WH or DOD. If so, that is a big mistake on his part.

(9,243 posts)Pre invasion that would not matter much. But now Ukraine is hanging on every expression of tangible support, as their people are being killed, night and day.

It is not an error, it is a tragedy.

Thats how.

(54,369 posts)The Ukrainians will say their airspace is theirs, and the Russians will say it is theirs. I dont see how any Ukrainian airspace can be considered to be uncontested under such circumstances.

But we do not know how irrational Mr Putin might have become?
But the world cannot sit by and watch a dictator take one country after another, one bite after another. We should have learned thru history that we must stop tyrants immediately.
Putin has declared war on the West. On Europe. On the USA. That is too close to reality.
Propaganda is a major weapon when countries choose to go to war.
But make no mistake, it was Russian troops that came across Ukraine's border. Russia was the aggressor. Most of the world sees it.
The NATO countries need to unite at this time. They should invite Ukraine to join them, in my opinion.

(13,933 posts)Go ahead and give your planes to Ukraine and Give your planes to a US Airbase in Germany are not exactly the same thing.
Just guessing, though
