Son-in-law...who purposely mispronounces her first name.
Him: "She's the most ineffective Vice President ever!"
Me: "How?" "Why?"
Him: "She's supposed to be the border czar and is never at the border. She's never visible."
I tried to pull up facts to refute this.
Me: "So, what's the reason for the current focus on the VP to be the savior of all things? Was this applied to any other former VP? Name me three things Pence solved in his tenure."
Him: "At least he went to the border of North Korea."
Me: "And how did that turn out?"
More back and forth.
Me: "Do you think she is subject to a double standard because she is the first womam VP and VP of color?"
Him: "How DARE you call me sexist and racist!"
Eye roll.

(16,078 posts)she has to do everything in order to be perceived as doing anything.
That's how it works in this country.
A white woman has to be twice as good.
A non-white woman has to be many more times than that.
All in order to be perceived as half as competent as the most mediocre white man possible.

I prided her on her patience. She told me she was just observing what she called "The Ladder" I asked what that was. She said her Momma told her how it works many years ago.
On the ladder the white man is on top, next is the white woman, next is the black man and at the bottom is the black woman. I was sad to hear this late 19 century, early 20 th century thinking . I'm glad it's changing but it takes a while to win hearts and minds..

(983 posts)A lot of white people want to keep their position on the ladder so they consider themselves above other people
Thinking more about
I, a white woman, would rather be at the bottom with a sister of color and be able to shake the ladder and knock off all the jackass's

(10,106 posts)Along with all the other nasty things white conservative men always say in these situations, they'll also purposely mispronounce her name, predictably feigning outrage when their sexism and racism is pointed out.

(24,396 posts)Of course, Fox and MSM kept acting like she should have been living at the border and singlehandedly preventing people from crossing the border- otherwise she wasn't doing anything (or worse was encouraging more immigration)

She is also being briefed by an array of experts on policies that affect the flow of migrants.
But administration officials, from the president down, have stressed that she is not responsible for dealing with the surge of migrants at the border, including the record number of unaccompanied minors."

(987 posts)On occasion I will respond with some actual factual information but they are both so indoctrinated by Faux etc. that it is hardly worth my time and effort. Of course anything I might cite from NPR, Washington Post, or any other reputable generally factual source is immediately dismissed as socialist propaganda. It makes me sad - I no longer want to visit with them in person. At least I can ignore text messages.

That term's an anti-democracy button-pusher for me. I'd never let him get the conversation back to our VP.

(15,337 posts)Maybe it's about race/sex, maybe not. Many here said criticism of Obama was largely race-based, but I don't really see Republicans going any easier on Joe Biden. They also hammered Bill Clinton, who is an Anglo moderate.
