LONDON, March 9 (Reuters) - Russia warned the West on Wednesday that it was working on a broad response to sanctions that would be swift and felt in the West's most sensitive areas.
"Russia's reaction will be swift, thoughtful and sensitive for those it addresses," Dmitry Birichevsky, the director of the foreign ministry's department for economic cooperation, was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.

(7,077 posts)I get it. Nuclear weapons are scary. But Russia has nothing to gain from a nuclear war. Why is there so much fear-mongering that they'll just press the button. But they have NOTHING to gain from that.
In any case, I was speaking specifically about economic cards. They have nothing.

(12,092 posts)I think that if Daddy Vladdy ordered a nuclear launch, the Russian Military may just balk and take him out, at least that's my fervent hope, and on the economic cards, you're correct, they have noting to threaten the West with.

(1,904 posts)it wouldn't be a strategic launch, it would a tactical nuke. Russia's nuclear doctrine differentiates between the two much more than Western doctrines do.
Russia has adopted an "escalate to de-escalate" strategy in their nuclear doctrine. Essentially, they will use threats of a nuclear strike or an actual limited nuclear strike during a conventional war in order to force the opposition to surrender or make concessions. This was further reported within our 2018 Nuclear Posture Review.
From page 7 of the NPR 2018
Chinese strategy, Russia may also rely on threats of limited nuclear first use, or actual first
use, to coerce us, our allies, and partners into terminating a conflict on terms favorable to
Russia. Moscow apparently believes that the United States is unwilling to respond to
Russian employment of tactical nuclear weapons with strategic nuclear weapons.
From page 30 of the NPR 2018.
suggesting a mistaken expectation that coercive nuclear threats or limited first use could
paralyze the United States and NATO and thereby end a conflict on terms favorable to
Russia.
Russia believes that its threats or the use of tactical nuclear weapon can put it in an advantageous position in a conventional military conflict. They do not regard tactical nuclear weapons the same way as strategic ones. Now, this could be a massive miscalculation by the Russian military, but this is their mindset, based on the most recent publicly available assessments.

(1,904 posts)If what was in the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review is still accurate, then I think the Russians are mistaken in thinking they could get away with using a tactical nuke. I believe worldwide pressure would require retaliation in kind. Then that's where it gets interesting.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,092 posts)but the Russian Generals are under no illusion that the West, particularly the US, will retaliate in kind and it's my belief that those same Generals will balk at such an order.
With all the excellent intelligence we're getting out of Russia, it's my strong belief that western intelligence has a high level mole inside Daddy Vladdy's inner circle and possibly inside the Russian High Command.
Of course, this is just my opinion and I hope to hell I'm right otherwise.......

sgate is reporting only 58% of Russians support Putrids war, that's low for a totalitarian state

(4,715 posts)I should have been more clear. I think the counter-sanctions proposed by Putin could be serious, as Europe depends on Russian fuel. If Putin withholds fuel, it could be a big issue.

Really, we should wait and see what he means, because this is probably a call out to his besties.
Trump, Rubio, Scott and De Santis are probably going to increase their anti-Biden rhetoric. They know they're going to get cut off. Jill Stein, probably crying because she knows, last one in, first one out. And Thing One and Thing Two in Congress are probably going to turn into Dunwich Horrors with their obstructionist moves.
