Zelensky: Our military managed to replenish its arsenal due to the many pieces of equipment it took on the battlefield. Enemy tanks, armored vehicles, ammo will now work for our defense. What could be more humiliating for the invaders? Well beat the enemy with its own weapons.

(17,065 posts)The usual problem in employing the enemy's weapons is ammunition, which is generally specific to the nation that made the weapon. But using captured tanks goes all the way back to the first use of tanks, and there are pictures of Afrika Korps units with American Stuart tanks, for example. Israel turned this into a fine art in the '60s, taking a number of captured Soviet-built tanks and retrofitting them with the NATO 105mm gun, which was a great weapon. Some tankers preferred the Soviet tanks because they had a lower profile than American or British tanks.

(21,856 posts)He seems to be the only one not afraid of Putin, and this is especially true when you see republicans, our so-called vaunted expert on Foreign Policy matters, all cowering and fearful of Putin and his thugs.
Cowering doesn't look good on republicans. And I don't see Pres. Biden cowering, but instead, is being calm, thoughtful, and concerned about the weapons Russia wields and uses to threaten others, thus we been alert, on our toes, not letting these fears consume oneself, and if need be, calmly and coolly responding to Russian aggression when appropriate.
If anything, it's easy to go back in time, and see where the Russian military has armed others in the past...and failed. Their vaunted Army and Arms have failed them in Afghanistan, in Syria for the most part, and in invading Ukraine (for the 2nd time, no less!, which was supposedly supposed to be a cake walk), and other places.
Why? I'd say Russian propaganda is working too well. I'd also say that corruption is rampart too, being that it's easy to hide the corruption in a large entity such as the Russian forces, thus they are a constant target by their own billionaires, who are, I am sure, looking to fulfill Russian contracts the cheapest way possible, or rip the Russian government off w/ the tacit approval of paid off Putin thugs.

(11,032 posts)I would also give any seized Russian equipment a good working over. From all the vehicles dying on the road, the level of maintenance in Russian motor pools is pretty bad.

(4,889 posts)When winter hit in 1941 and 1942, German troops often found their weapons would suddenly stop operating. Often, the Partisans and in some cases, Soviet Army troops would pick up the frozen German weapons, drop some gun lubrication into them, and turn them on the Nazis who brought them into Russia.
