Bombing fleeing civilians.
Bombing hospitals.
Even endangering nuclear sites.
Laying siege to cities and towns.
These are crimes against humanity.
Killing people for no better reason than their nationality is genocide.
HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH TO CAUSE US ACT?
This is not a time for timidity.
This is not the first time Russian brutality has been employed without consequence.

(3,922 posts)We are all aware of the nuclear threat, but what about the threat of letting this horror continue unabated?
Does anyone really think putin will stop at the Ukraine?
There has to be a soft spot in there somewhere between nuclear annihilation and appeasement.
Imo, this is a massive failure of intelligence - that we can not apparently get inside this regime.
Militarily though, we're in the same boat as the Russians: neither one of us can win a guerilla war.

(58,785 posts)to impose its socialist empire, so take that as a starting point. We didn't stop that; but in the balance let's also throw in that we didn't blow up the world either. We have to consider that great victory for the over 7B who have survived.
On the big-plus side now, Western nations especially are obviously organized to far more effectively stop and/or limit wars than when WW1 and WWII broke out. That's been huge progress, though clearly not where we need to be.
As for our individual inputs to the civilization of the planet's democracies, how many of us have genuinely and consistentliy voted to empower it? At least fewer people seem to think throwing their vote away third party or by writing in their dog is a way to make a "statement." So maybe we're getting a bit smarter and learning from our tragic mistakes too.

US made it clear, no intervention. That means to me even if 40M are neutered with chemical weapon or otherwise, there will be no intervention unless NATO territory is affected. The gray area, perhaps, if Russia successfully attacks a nuclear plant and radiation severely impacts neighboring NATO countries - e.g., Poland, Romania, Hungary, etc.

Some (very) recently. And we hear nothing, we see nothing, and we say nothing.
My only real surprise is that the the western world is unifying around and talking about this one.

If you want to be upset it is that the West coddled Putler and avoided deterrence leading up to this catastrophe. We entered into economic relationships with a madman because of greed and corruption.
He is a war criminal. This is how the Russians operate.
Directly confronting this madman, this cornered rat, has a distinct possibility of escalating into a global nuclear exchange, probably more so than at any other time in the Cold War.
Go listen to Putler and Alexander Dugin and really comprehend the calculus here.
Give them everything they need to defend themselves, arms, money, mercenaries, intelligence, political pressure, and crushing sanctions but stop short of direct military confrontation.
That will happen if he violates a NATO ally. You can count on it.
