In 1939, Hitler invaded Poland. With the exception of Russia, no European country has invaded another European country since then, except for Russia. And Ukraine ain't the first place where Russia has done it.
Notice that I'm talking about Europe. Can anyone here mention how many African and/or Asian countries have invaded their neighbors since 1939? Go ahead, take a shot at the answer.
My point is that the majority of Americans, (white Americans), tend to focus on European invasions, more than they do to any other invasions around the world.
What's happening today in Ukraine is a horrible nightmare, and Putin and all others responsible for this human tragedy must be made to answer in full.
However, spend a few moments on google and check out a few facts about the rest of the world. The numbers of invasions are far beyond what we are aware of. Most of us may be able to name only a few, if any.
It seems to me that this reinforces the accusation that racism is a disease that is deeply embedded in America. Anyone here want to defend it? Even we Democrats have too often failed to stand up against this horrible human trait, we too bear partial responsibility for having often ignored it.
So I, for one, admit that I didn't pay as much attention to African/Asian invasions as much as I am paying to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Shame on me. Shame on all of us who have ignored it for decades.
If/When sane people on this planet can manage to put an end to this invasion and this nuclear threat to the world, perhaps we can start paying attention to how we can forever end the threats of bullies, dictators, and would-be tyrants forever.

(67,766 posts). . . . . if the world (the "we" in your OP) unites to stop this and bring Putin to some state of accountability, might not then set a precedent?
No matter how lacking was humanity in the past, any time humanity starts to act humanely is a good day - and possibly the start of a sea change.

Japan killed, raped, maim countless Koreans.
And that names a few. The problem right now. Nuclear Weapons, which a lot of countries have, i.e. Russia to name one.
It concerns me and my family that a madman can use his Nuclear Weapons as leverage.

(9,886 posts)to annex Japan you better believe you will hear about it. It's about the relative threat, not the complexion of the players.

There are 28+/- conflicts in progress. Some are hot, some very cool. Are we going to appoint ourselves World Superhero an go around invading countries to impose peace on them?

(7,819 posts)Moreover, the endgame must be clear.
Moreover, strong probability of long lasting success
Moreover, low risk of catastrophe
To achieve all this, public support, strong supply lines, good weather and official support of organizations such as
Nato, the UN or the United Federation of Planets.
There are at least 7 places of military conflict or strong potential thereof in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean region stretching across to Iran and down to Sudan.
One of the strongest armies in the region is Egypt and theres zero sign that it intends to interfere militarily outside its borders.
thats a sign of disinterest.

(1,584 posts)Even a flawed democracy warrants our attention and response. Proven by our decades of support for South Korea and Taiwan. Our coming to the aid of Muslim Kosovo.
Yes we have turned a blind eye to many conflicts involving people of color. We have abandoned them in the name of national interests. Yes, I think it is well past the time of supporting dictators that serve our interests, starting with Saudi Arabia.
But we need to stand up for democracy both here and abroad. Forcefully.

We have stood by too often when countries in middle-east, Asia, Africa, South America have been invaded or subjected to internal strife.
But that shouldnt detract from Ukraine right now.
