I would love to know what media @CawthornforNC is consuming that gets him to this conclusion. Yes, he's not generally thought to be the brightest bulb in congress, but this is still pretty shocking.

US Rep. Madison Cawthorn calls Zelensky a 'thug'
The remarks from the North Carolina Republican congressman seeking reelection are out of step with the view of most GOP voters and the broader public.

RALEIGH, N.C. U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina told supporters he thought Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a "thug"a comment that runs counter to the overwhelming share of Republicans with a favorable view of the leader fending off a military invasion from Russia.
"Remember that Zelenskyy is a thug," Cawthorn said in a video obtained by WRAL. "Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt and is incredibly evil and has been pushing woke ideologies."
The congressman's spokesman, Luke Ball, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the video. It was unclear where the video was taken. Cawthorn had a number of events in the state over the weekend.
Cawthorn, who is running for reelection in the state's westernmost district, faces a string of primary challengers.
One of his 11th Congressional District opponents, Michele Woodhouse, called the comments out of touch and boorish" and said she considers Zelenskyy "a hero."

(8,756 posts)Something is seriously wrong when an individual like Cawthorn can be elected to public office.
He is a danger in action (thinking driving) and even more of a danger because of his spew to other damaged minds.

(15,070 posts)Those are his two appealing attributes for Republican voters.
I think Kevin McCarthy is only in Congress because he's tall and handsome. (Handsome is truly in the eyes of the beholder. I find them deeply ugly all in all.)
The fact that Cawthorn is a stupid, cruel, thoughtless idiot, doesn't seem to matter.

a more presentable Republican will probably be the general candidate.
The Republican establishment will benefit from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They will probably replace the nutter wing of their party.
Their policies will not be any better for Americans or the world.

There will be new GOP nutters, qualifications are a minus for their favored pols.
The plan and policy of the GOP is to maintain and tilt the USA where some are more equal than others.

You can absolutely tell what kind of media someone is consuming by what comes out of their mouth.
When people talk about news items of the day like the war in Ukraine, and do so with various ideas of the impact on civilians, why Putin would do so, and the response or lack thereof from NATO, then you can tell they consume the mainstream media sources like the legacy broadcasters at ABC, CBS, and NBC or the cable channels like CNN, MSNBC, Headline News, etc... Print such as the New York Time or Washington Post, etc...
When people talk about "anti-imperialism" they could be getting information from either far left media or right wing media distorting left wing rhetoric.
When people talk about bullshit like what Cawthorn is saying, then you absolutely know they are far down the right wing rabbit hole, likely straight Russian propaganda or White Supremacist media that echoes Russian propaganda.

(9,657 posts)which I don't believe is the case. So what? When has thuggish behavior ever prevented the US from supporting brutal and/or corrupt foreign governments if it advances our corporate and national interests: Central and South America, the Saudis, the Shah's Iran, Saddam's Iraq, wartime South Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, etc?
We are rightfully clamping down on a thuggish Putin because of his horrific adventure into Ukraine despite TFG's previous efforts to kiss the Russian ass. There has never been any moral consistency in the way our country deals with other countries though many Americans would like to think otherwise.
Nope, Cawthorn doesn't get to use that argument.
