That fear is instilled in you since you are a child and throughout the years, it keeps proving to be true that any opposition would get that person dead. Your parents are brought up that way and taught you from childhood to stay quiet even when you have doubts because not only your own life is at risk, you are going to get your whole family killed.

I am not trying to excuse them but there is reasons why it works in Russia, China and North Korea.
